Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

At my wits end w/ DD sleep issue - advice?

I'll try to make this long story as short as possible:  DD is 1 1/2 and is typically a very good sleeper (i.e. doesn't wake up in the middle of the night, sleeps 7:30-7am no problem).  Well, the past 3 nights in a row, and 5 out of the last 8 nights, she has woken up in the middle of the night crying and screaming.  We've given her Tylenol, thinking that perhaps she's getting a molar or had an earache or something.  Took her to the pedi yesterday and besides a little cold, she's completely healthy.

When she wakes up, she is absolutely hysterical and nothing can really console her.  The other night, the only thing that would quiet her down was reading books, but then when we tried putting her back to bed, all hell broke loose again.

I'm getting so frustrated because I don't know what the problem is or how to deal with it.  Last night, we let her scream and cry for 20 minutes before going in there to console her.  Ugh, this is terrible.

Any advice?

  • Well if she has a cold that can do it. Babies usually don't sleep well when they get sick. She might be getting stuffed up which wakes her up. Run the cool mist humidifier and prop up one end of her bed (put something under one end of the mattress). While she is sick CIO won't work.

  • Try to not cuddle her for too many days.  We did this when DD was sick and she completely reverted and started waking up in the middle of the night.  We had to let her CIO for a few nights (luckily, only three), then she was better.

Perhaps the cold is messing with her though and the comfort is nice.  Of course, there is no cure like Mommy and Daddy - just be careful of the length of time you do this.

  • My DD just went through this as well. Last night was her first night back to normal in about a week. She had been sick, got over it, but was still screaming at bedtime, naptime, waking up in the middle of the night, which was so not like her. She was teething, I think too, so we'd give motrin but it made for some long nights. All I can tell you was that she got over it on her own, went right back to taking good naps the last couple days and last night went right to bed and slept 12 hrs straight. Frustrating though, I know.

  • I don't really think it's her cold that's affecting her because she's had much worse ones and hasn't woken up like this.  We do run the humidifier, though.  I guess it's just one of those frustrating things with kids - they can't tell you what's wrong Sad
  • nightmares maybe?
  • This sounds exactly like us about three weeks ago - and it was definitely from teething. My DS cut 6 teeth in the last month, and it took a good two weeks of multiple, screaming wakeups before he was back to normal. We tried to comfort him, but the only things that helped were Motrin, and time. You will get through it! Good luck!
