Do you think I'm obnoxious for...

putting on my LO's bday invite that he would love a book instead of a birthday card?

I didn't think anything of it at the time I was doing the invites, but now I'm sorta feeling guilty since the party is in a day.

  • Maybe a little bit since a card is just a couple of dollars while a book could be about $10. A book itself could be the gift so it's like you're asking for multiple gifts.

  • I did that for my shower and had a cute poem about it, now when I read the books and see how much some people spent that's like an extra $15-20 plus the present!  I thought books were like $4-5.

Anyways, I guess it depends on how you worded it.

  • I never like being told what to buy someone. I would probably roll my eyes at this request, but its not the end of the world.

  • I wouldn't care personally. I know that some people will/would get there panties in a bunch over it though. NMS to get worked up over silly things like that.

Not to mention I love buying books for children. So that wouldn't bother me. They'llg et more use out of a book than a $3. card.

  • Aw man, I feel crappy...

Hopefully my friends won't hate me lol.  I only invited 3 couples, the rest are family.  My family won't care.

  • i think the only time its acceptable to specify regarding "gifts" is if you said something like "in lieu of a gift, please bring canned goods for our local food pantry" or something similar that is charity related.

  • I wouldn't worry too much. If I got that invite (as I did for many baby showers) I just bought a small board book instead of card.

    This.
  • Yeah, don't worry about it.

I wouldn't do it because I know it's a no-no and some people in my life would be up in arms about it because this is the south. But if I got an invite like that, it would totally depend on who it was coming from as to whether or not I'd be annoyed. If it was someone that was always high maintenence and a b!tch, it would totally annoy me. If it was from a close friend who I adore, I would want to get her what she wants.

Yea, i'm not that type of person...I've never asked my friends for a thing and would do anything for any of them.  They are the same way.

ITA  - but what's done is done.  I'd personally tell my friends I didn't realize that I was asking them for more $$ and felt bad... just to get it out there that I didn't mean to be tacky or offensive.
