Fake INS rejection notice & a question

Last week we saw that INS cashed our check so we knew they were going to go ahead and process our application.  Then the other day we got rejection notice from them!  I started freaking out and getting upset about delays, etc.  Then I looked at the attached sheet and saw "due to a system problem, your attached notice was printed in error.  It indicates that your application as been rejected.  However, your application has been received and forwarded for further processing...."  What?!?!?  Why did they feel it was necessary to send me the incorrect rejection notice and not just a letter and give me a panic attack???  I guess that's government efficiency for you!

So for those of you who have gone through the process already: do they normally send out two separate notices - one to let you know your application has been processed and one to let you know when to get fingerprinted, or is it normally all in one?  Should I call and ask them about fingerprinting or just wait for a second notice?

Thanks!

Re: Fake INS rejection notice & a question

  • Don't worry, you'll get a second notice about the fingerprinting.

Everytime they do anything with your case, you'll get a "notice of action."  On the bottom of the paperwork (at least on the application), there's a reference to a federal regulation on reducing paperwork.  I think they haven't quiet figured it out yet.

ETA:  It's really weird that they sent you the rejection notice.  All I can think of is that it's some requirement that you receive all documents related to your file.  How bizarre.

  • Thanks!  I will just wait for the second notice, then.  I agree - I don't think ANY government agency has figured out the paperwork reduction thing!
  • Totally normal except for the rejection notice part. Normally it would say "receipt" when they get it. To give you an idea we got the receipt about a week after we mailed it and then maybe two weeks or so after that got the fingerprint appt notice, which was about a week later. So it was almost a month after we mailed it originally that we did our fingerprints. I don't know if that's typical and it may depend on where you live in terms of how soon they schedule your fingerprint appointment.
  • Thanks.  I was wondering about the time-line, too.  It's almost kind of nice that it takes them so long to give approval -- it takes the pressure off me to finish the dossier a little.
  • Ditto - we also got 2 letters from them. The first was a "receipt" and about 2 weeks later, we got a notice saying we need to call and make an appointment at our local USCIS to get fingerprinted. Just a few days later, we were getting fingerprinted again (we already had to do this once since we live in NY). In fact, I don't even think it was 2 weeks between the two letters. Our agency told us to put "Please Expedite - International Adoption" on our application that we sent in and on the envelope - so maybe that had something to do with it?

Anyways, I am in the exact situation you mentioned about pressure to complete the dossier. Our social worker already sent us a home study draft yesterday and I just want to be like wait - give me like 2 days to get caught up on other things haha.

Either way - yes, I find it strange they sent you the incorrect rejection letter - weird!
