I've been dealing with really severe hair loss for quite some time now. I went from having ridiculously thick hair to hair so thin that you could see my scalp through my ponytail over about a 3 month period. It's filling in a little bit now, but it's still reeeeeaaally thin for me and doesn't feel right (despite going back to more expensive shampoo/conditioner in case that was the problem).
I've been through the gamut of medical tests and doctors, and did find some things that could contribute, but no one really looked into PCOS as a cause. Anyone have any issues with hair loss from PCOS and, if so, how did you treat it?
FWIW, I'm already on 850 mg of Met twice a day.
Re: PCOS and hair loss?
yes, PCOS is notorious for hair loss... I also used to have super thick hair, but now it is quite thin.
treatment? well, there aren't that many options, really. Spiroaldactone is the go to method, but you cannot take that if you are TTC, in fact, most doctors will not even discuss it if you aren't in bcp.
Some articles I have bookmarked....
Medical Treatments of Androgenetic Alopecia
I remember talking with you about this a while back. I've since had tons of blood work, and all the Dr. tells me is that the hair loss is hormonal. I find it pretty ironic that my hair is thinning on my head, but I'm pretty hairy every where else.
My Dr said the only way to treat it is with a perscription hair growth med, which does me no good since I am TTC. (I'm not on met, but I'm thinking of going to speak to someone about it soon.) I haven't heard of any other options.
PCOS and hair loss is pretty common. My mom has it worse than I do and she tends to just use a little bit of Rogain (sp?) which I don't think you can use if you're TTCing. I have a friend who uses Dexamethasone (aka Decadron) and she has had a lot of success with her hair filling in again only problem is it's another non-TTC drug. I've heard of some natural remedies but I don't know anyone who has tried them. Are you taking Pre-natal vitamins? I know my hair really started to get thick again when I started taking them while we were TTCing and it's gotten a lot thicker being pg. I know you're planning to do IVF so maybe if you're not on them you could start now?
Good luck!
I've never been diagnosed with pcos, but I htink i have it.
pregnancy wreaked havoc on my hair or breastfeeding and it thinned out. Now, that I 'm pregnant again, I'm getting some hair growth and it is so bad looking...DH hates bangs and told me that I look like I have bangs since I have some hair growing back now that is shorter than the rest.
I have no answers, but would like some...mine is in the front...and probably not as bad as others or that noticeable as I think...
