For us it has saved money. And using the diapers for #2 will save us even more. We really don't use that much more water. It's even less if you have HE machines.
I cringe every time I walk by the diaper aisle at the store and see how expensive those puppies are. I like thinking about all the money I'm going to save when I don't have to buy a single diaper for our second child. ::contented sigh::
For us we saved money, but we didn't go too crazy on buying a bunch of expensive CDs. It's really easy to become addicted and go a little nuts with them because they're so darn cute.
I know someone's got a spreadsheet out there, hopefully they chime in.
If you stick with less expensive kinds and only buy what you need, you will definitely save a lot of money! It's possible to spend more money on cloth if you go overboard and constantly buy new ones. Stick with prefolds or one/ two size types and you should be fine :-) This is a great place to learn.
Poonico's blog: theecofriendlyfamily.blogspot.com has a lot of great CD info.
"one size" seriously?! there's like a one size fits all cloth diaper?!
::: off to google search :::
Indeed there is - some options include Bum Genius, Fuzzibunz, Blueberry, Goodmamas. You could also use prefolds and once you're out of the newborn stage they're pretty much one-size fits all as well plus they're very cheap.

I saw those (in google) but looks like Goodmamas only has 3 designs? (right? no plain?)
Also, "one size" do they really fit the newborns well? And do all cloth diapers use inserts? Do you just buy different size inserts?
Can't there be SOMEONE in my town that is an expert on this that I can go talk to face to face. LOL

It's overwhelming, isn't it? Where do you live? If you have a local natural baby store they'll probably carry some cloth that you can go look at and ask questions about. Otherwise the best way to learn is by lurking and reading on this board.
OS dipes generally do not fit newborns well. A lot of people choose to use prefolds through the nb phase because they're cheap and it passes so quickly. Other buy used to keep the cost down and remember you can always resell when you're done with the diapers.
There are 4 basic different kinds of cloth diapers:
prefolds - the old-fashioned kind that everyone thinks of when they hear cloth, these need a cover
fitteds - snap or velcro into place, need a cover
pockets - don't need a cover because they're waterproof, are stuffed with inserts, nice because you can vary how absorbent they are by what you stuff them with
all-in-ones - like pockets but you don't have to stuff them, the closest thing to a disposable
Wow- thanks for that break down! So, I'm wanting prefolds for newborn stage (gotta get covers too), then probably pockets or all in ones... (if one better or cheaper then the other?) I was thinking pockets.
I don't think I'd want to buy used ones, that kinda grosses me out.
I feel the same way you do, but they really do resell. Check ebay. you will be amazed. A g/f of mine buys and sells used frequently (as needed for her). If you take care of the diapers you will get a surprising amount back for them.
Also, do you have a birth center near you? My local birth center offers "cloth diapering classes" for free. A local seller brings an assortment and talks to you about them.

That's what I did - we used prefolds and some fitteds called Kissaluv size 0's for the nb stage and now we use pockets and all-in-ones. However it's really personal and you may have to try a few things to see what works best for you and fits your LO best.
If you go here https://www.thirstiesbaby.com/usa.htm you can put in your zip and find a retailer near you, this is for thirsties covers, hopefully someone in your area has a store! I found a store in RI using this website (my family is from RI) and built up a registery at their store so my RI family can buy some if they want.
