POLL: AW your "vain" accomplishments as a mom

What are some of the things--big and small-- that you are proud of since becoming a mom? (Some could be things that people said you would never do, like wearing make-up, etc.)

Mine are:

1. Showering every day and putting make-up on.

2. Shaving EVERY day. That's right--even in the hospital, yo.

3. I have never left the house without make-up. (Even at 2am, in labor. I showered, straightened my hair and put on make-up.) :)

4.  Never gave up BFing, even when my supply went away and it would have been easier to quit. Finally found the right combo of herbs. Still at it 10 months later!

  • I'm still preggo, but on slightly the same AW topic...I'm 38 weeks todays and I'm still shaving it all AND I still wear my regular thongs!  From what I've heard most women give both of these us by now...so it's my little accomplishment!Big Smile

I NEVER stopped shaving---it got pretty scary balancing in the shower! Good for you!!

LOL!  I'm still okay with the balancing...it's just the "going by feeling" that's kind of scary on the stuff I can't see under my belly!  I tell my husband, "It may not be the prettiest, but it's at least done!"  I've actually done quite well thus far, so with so little time left I don't see why I should stop nowSmile

  • Lala - I'm impressed that you shave every day. I have NEVER done that.

    My accomplishments...

    1. BF exclusively for 13.5 months. I was pretty amazed that my body could sustain a life completely for almost 6 months until we started solids.

    2. I am a semi-crunchy mom (EBF, Cloth Diaper, homemade baby food, baby wearing, etc) and I actually really like it - even if it's different than ALL of my IRL friends. I catch a lot of grief, but that's OK :)

    3. My most "vain" accomplishment...pre-pregnancy clothes are too big! The jeans I'm wearing these days are all from college. (However, I'm pretty sure my torso must have stretched during pregnancy b/c very few of my tops are long enough anymore.)

  • 1. I breastfed for over 14 months and never had to give formula!  My goal was to BF until DS self-weaned, and we accomplished that.  Being able to provide all the nourishment my child needed for the first 6 months of his life, and the majority of his nourishment for the next 6 months was amazing!

    2. I have increased my running distance by 3x what I used to be able to run before, and I completed a half-marathon.  I never thought I could do something like that, but I did it.

    3. I make time for myself to go to the gym every day (though I did get out of the habit when I wasn't feeling great).  It was hard to decide to lose some time with Nate in the AM, but I think that being healthy and taking the time out of my day to exercise is really important and it will be good for Nate to see that I prioritize exercise as he's growing up.  Gym time is often the only time I get each day where I can just focus on myself, so it's good for me mentally & physically.

  • 1.  Breastfeeding for 10 months and loving it.  It took a good 5-6 months to get in the groove, so I'm happy I stuck it out.

    2.  Cloth diapering / making baby food for Ella.  My DH still makes fun of me as I try new recipes for her and it's so  hit / miss, but I love that I'm doing something good for the environment and for her as well.

    3.  Still working out - granted not as much, but I do sun salutations every morning to get me balanced.

    4.  Striving for work / life balance.  When I shut down at 5, I really do - no blackberry / laptop at the dinner table.  I may log in after Ella goes to bed and DH / I have dinner at the dinner table together, but I really am trying to focus on family first.

  • 1. I have showered every day since DS was born. I'm not so good at the shaving part! Embarrassed

    2. I got past the pony tail phase, and now straighten my hair almost every day - even when we're just staying home.

    3. I have been BF for 11 months. This was truly the hardest thing to get the hang of, and it took at least 4 months for me to be comfortable and not in pain. I am SUPER proud of myself for not quitting when everyone thought I should.

    4. Keeping our home organized. I do almost all the chores, shopping, cooking and paying bills - and I almost always stay on top of things. Our life isn't 100% organized, but we are fed, clean and the bills are always paid.

I'm proud of you too!  Watching you go through it was not fun, but you were so determined and I can only hope if I have half the issues that you did that I'm as strong and tough as you!Big Smile

  • here are mine:

all my pre-pregnancy clothes fit and I feel comfortable in my post pregnancy body.

DH and I have dinner at the dinner table on majority of the nights, we have done this even before Nic.

We are very fortunate but having Nicolas has not affected us financially.  We still go out to dinner and travel back home.

ETA: I'm still BF even with the pressure from my family to supplement b/c my LO is skinny.  It was a rough start and the hardest thing I've ever done but it is so gratifying.

  • - I am 10 lbs below my pre-pregnancy weight! I wake up early 3 times per week and run before Savannah wakes up, and have eaten so much better!

    - I ALWAYS do my hair and makeup when I'm leaving the house (unless it's just for a quick run to CVS or something)

    - I started and finished training for the medical field (part 1 of 2 ... part 2 of 2 will be this fall)

    -  And this just started once she became mobile ... but I am a NEAT FREAK about my house (the downstairs, anyways).

  • These were true with Ashley, I am not sure if all of them will happen with #2 (well, specifically #1!!)

    1) Only gained 25 pounds and lost it all in a week and a half (and was back in my pre-pregnancy clothes). Was actually five pounds under my pre-pregnancy weight (when I got pg this time)

    2) Made all her food and use CDs (and am really trying to get my friends IRL who are pg interested)

    3) I had a really bad supply, I think most people would have given up after dealing with everything I dealt with, but I kept it up and managed to nurse for 10 months, even though she did have to get formula too b/c she was not gaining weight on just my BM

    4) That we have a life! I remember people telling us we would never be able to anything once we had a baby. That was true for the first three months, but since then, we have been able to take Ashley everywhere and I feel like we have not missed out on anything (and we get to spend so much time with her). I think we have more of a life now than we did before we had her :)

  • 1. DS has been EBF since he was born and I've never had to give him formula. I'm still amazed that I was able to provide his sole nourishment for the first 6 months of his life!

    2. I made all of my own baby food for DS, and I continue to make and feed him fresh things as he moves up to table food.

    3. I make an effort to get in at least a couple of good runs each week, even though there is a lot less time for myself during the day.

    4. I'm actually below my pre-pregnancy weight.

    5. I make the time (and budget for) a good haircut every 6 to 8 weeks.

ETA: 6. I shower and shave every day. (I've shaved every day since as far back as I can remember, even when I was big and pregnant)

  • Wow! I am really impressed with you ladies this morning. I would say the biggest things I am proud of are

    1. Getting back into a good running schedule despite persistent tailbone pain that still hasn't gone away following my delivery 8 months ago. I am training for my first post-baby half marathon now and it feels great to be back out and preparing for a race again!

    2. Not being afraid to travel with DS. I have taken him on several solo road trips and we've taken him on two trips that required flights and he did great on all of them. We are planning a trip to the UK this spring/summer too. I agree with LAH that a lot of people act like you are going to be housebound for years and I really think it has a lot to do with your own attitude toward travel and activities. I am happy we are able to take DS with us on trips now. It is so fun to show him the world!

I totally agree with this! We've had some fun trips with Nolan already, and I'm really looking forward to some of the trips we have planned for the spring and summer.

  • 1.  EBF (no formula but of course she was on table food) Natalie until she was 12.5 mo old -- met my goal.  Hoping to do the same with Claire.

    2.  Lost all my pg weight with Natalie and ran my first half marathon.  Working on doing the same thing now although it's much harder to get time with two LOs.

    3.  Used CDs and made most of our own baby food.  Still using CDs with two LOs.

    4.  Take a shower, do my hair and make-up every morning.

  • Having a child who will put herself to sleep and STTN without having ever done any sort of sleep training.

Having a smart, happy, healthy child (and happy mommy) despite my choices to formula feed, and not make my own pureed food...

Even in the earlier days--always taking a shower..every day. Sometimes two.

Unfortunately, I have nothing to brag about in the "lost all my pregnancy weight" category... But I'm working on it. :-)

Having a child who will put herself to sleep and STTN without having ever done any sort of sleep training.

Oh, good one! We have been very fortunate w/ this too. She sleeps from like 7pm-8am, and takes 2 naps, 1.5 hours each. We lucked out, and she started this from a very early age!

Buuuuutttttt ..... that is why I'm terrified of what #2 will bring us. Huh?

  • 1. My daughter is very polite and listens to me. She is also finally saying please and thank you all the time and rarely throws tantrums.

    2. I BFed Kylie for 7.5 months, 6 months exclusively, and am still exclusively BFing Caroline.

    3. I am almost below my PP weight for Kylie and am the lightest I have been in 3 years.

    4. I potty trained a toddler with a newborn and met my goal of getting Kylie out of her diapers before Caroline needed them too.

    5. Kylie will choose a healthy food (such as fruit cup) over junk (fries) every time.  We worked hard to give her fresh, healthy things and I hope it pays off for the rest of her life and she doesn't have to struggle with craving junk like I do.

  • 1. That my child is very outgoing. We take him every where with us and because of this he will talk to anyone and everyone and loves being around others. He truly does not meet a stranger (at least not for more than a minute).

    2. One from the past is that Grady talked in sentences very early. I attribute that to the fact we talked to him and worked with him using words all the time.

This one is for my dh...
    1. We know he is only 3, but he is amazing with a baseball bat. He can hit the daylights out a ball. It is scary!

  • 1. I BF'd Connor until he was 19 months old.  Major accomplishment after the rough start we had and he had to have his frenulum clipped.

    2. He has said "please", "thank you" and "no thank you" pretty much since he started talking.

    3.  I got back down to my pre preg weight really fast (but unfortunately didn't stay there).

    4. I cook dinner nearly every night after working 9 hours away from home and we eat together as a family at the dining room table.  Huge deal for me.

    5.  Connor is a very happy, smart, well rounded child and I always get the "He's only 2? He talks/acts/behaves like he's older." comment.  That's my big boy!!

  • 1. Rosalyn is a well traveled baby.  She made her first long trip at 6 weeks and has been traveling ever since.  I think starting her young helped and I hope she remains a good traveler (crossing my fingers!).

    2. I BF her until 9 months and she's still getting my frozen BM currently.  My guess is she'll have enough to go on until around 11 months.

    3.  I am 10 lbs below prepregnancy weight and I take better care of myself than I did before I had a baby.

    4. I CD part time (she gets sposies at DC and when we travel).  I feel like that's a small little contribution I make for the environment.  It's very small though.

    5.  I gotta knock on wood before I type this one.  I've been blessed with a great sleeper.  I did read Babywise and I've practiced most of the principles so whether it was the book or my baby, I've gotten the good end on that.  I'll knock on wood once again though : )  I don't take it for granted one bit.

    6. I feel like I've become a more attentive wife.  It didn't happen overnight after Rosalyn was born. But I feel like I try a bit harder to be a better wife to DH now that DD is here.

    7. Overall, I've always said that DD makes me want to be a better person.  I've felt like that since the day I met her.
