Adoption

Any Homestudy advice?

Our homestudy is Monday and though I know each homestudy is going to be different because of the agency I thought I would ask you ladies if there were things you did/didn't do during your homestudy that you feel was positive/negative that you could share?  We are also reading the dummy & idiot adoption books but sometimes it's nice to hear from real people on this.  Thanks!

  • I know the homestudy can be nerve racking. Just try to relax and be yourself. Be open and honest and everything should go well. Good luck!

  • Ditto pp.  I was very worked up about the whole thing - especially the home visit, but it turned out to be a very smooth, easy process.  Just relax and be yourself.  Good luck!
  • Homestudy as in the home visit?

Ours went fine. We were just ready with answers to any questions. They asked about smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, makeup of the town and neighborhood, that sort of thing.

I think the anticipation is worse than the actual visit.

  • Just relax and be yourself.  Honestly, the agency wants to make this as easy on you as possible.  Barring any glaring reasons why you shouldn't be approved, everything will go smoothly.  They just want to make sure that you can and will provide a loving, safe home for any children placed with you.  They are not out to trick or catch you into being rejected.

I wish I had realized this before.  I was a nervous wreck, and the homestudy was more relaxed than most interviews I've had.  We just sat back and talked about ourselves.  Easy, schmisy!

  • We weren't nervous what so-ever, thanks to the gals here and we had met our SW a couple of weeks before and we connected with her on so many levels. We didn't want her to leave our house, that's how easy she was to talk to and visit with. Have you met with your SW before? Just be yourself and remembre she is there to help you, they aren't there looking for things to be wrong or bad. Good luck!
