Seriously, in the business world did it just fly out the window when the economy changed? DH was outright lied to, to his face recently. It was a part-time contract job, so really it could have ended at any time. It was enough to pay our house payment and the only income that was steady and we could count on. I know that doesn't matter to the employer, though.
He was told they weren't doing that task any more and were going to do it differently and then DH gets an email from a new person doing the exact job he had been doing. There was no "this needs to be done better/differently," no constructive criticism or anything. As far as DH knew he was doing great. There was no "we can't afford you anymore so we're going to get some cheap lackey." It so happens that someone in the office had a personal friend that needed a job. WTF? Of course an employer doesn't want to admit that they are doing business in that manner, because it isn't right. Find something else for the "friend" to do, have the friend wait until a position opens up. I'm sure "we have no openings right now" is something everyone has heard and is a valid reason for not being able to give someone a job. The least they could do is tell DH the truth, so he doesn't think he did something wrong. Finding out about the new person, by the new person directly emailing you, is just wrong.
People respect others that display honesty and integrity and eventually it will all come around, I keep hoping anyway. Karma can be a b!tch and my DH has certainly been doling out hefty doses of good karma, so I think it's his turn to have something good happen. People suck.

Oh no. Sorry to hear that happened to your family. That is truly horrendous.
