No fun. Remember to watch your calcium intake while you are nursing. Lots of dark leafy greens, cheese (if you can), fortified tofu and supplements. Best of luck!
that was me from the time DD was 5weeks old to 9mo old. The things no one tells you about BFing...
I was able to have goat milk, goat yogurt (yummy, Wegman's has it) as well as goat and sheep cheeses. I also started taking a calcium supplement.
the good thing is that your LO is likely to grow out of it
but be careful with the other dairies, I was OK with them but cow/sheep/ goat dairy products share 92% of their make-up so if your LO is intolerant of cow dairy, it may be the same for the others. But maybe not - worth it to try!
I was told to start by avoiding everything dairy, then slowly add stuff back in. I am a bit confused about how far to go...I wanted a hamburger, but Iooked and the buns I had contained a milk product...is there any bread that doesn't contain milk???
Also does the amount of side-effects your LO had relate to the amount of intolerance??? the only thing I noticed was some bloody poop. Otherwise he is a normal happy baby (no rashes, reflux, etc)? And I noticed that I only saw the blood after eating things like cheesy pizza and a milk-shake.

I attribute part of my weight loss post-baby to the no-dairy diet!
Lots and lots of foods contain random dairy products like whey. So far, the amounts seem to be too small to cause a severe reaction in DD. (She gets horrible gas pain or something like it, so there's no missing it.) And she also seems to tolerate certain foods better than others - I can eat foods cooked in butter in small quantities and she seems ok with parmesean cheese, but regular milk is bad and other cheeses are much MUCH worse. She's ok with Lactaid milk, even though it must still have milk proteins in it. Hopefully you can find a decent balance to keep you sane. I'm learning to like goat cheese for the first time simply because I miss all the other dairy products so much.
Thanks for all of the support! If this is the worst problem we have I will be thankful! I didn't realize how hard it would be, but I just need to get through the withdraw and I will be good! And once he is done BF I or grows out of it I will eat an tub of Ben and Jerrys and a tub of butter
(JK about the butter)

I had to do the no dairy thing too from about 3 weeks to 6 months. Like some of the previous posters I didn't have to eliminate things with dairy in them, just obvious dairy like milk, ice cream, butter and cheese. I too attribute my baby weight loss to that diet. Lost all my weight and then some but now that I'm back on dairy the few extra I lost have come back. I was able to drink soy and that really helped. I actually really loved soy in my coffee. It took a few weeks but after a while I didn't miss it that much...well except for ice cream and pizza.
I am also just starting a dairy free regimen... my little one has really bad/sensitive skin and my doc thinks it could be from either dairy, nuts or citrus that I'm eating, so she has me eliminating them all to see. I LOVE me some ice cream, so I'll have to find a good substitute. But, maybe it will help with the baby weight I'm thinking I'll start by trying to avoid anything that has dairy in it, and then add in some of the "hidden" dairy and see if it's ok.
Welcome to the Land of Soy! Well, as long as LO isn't milk/soy protein intolerant since they sometimes go together. We are in the exact same boat and C only had that one symptom as well. After only a week of avoiding obvious dairy sources, there was no trace of blood (which leaves me to wonder if the problem was actually dairy or the really spicy Thai I had the night before his appt., but I digress!). I
We've only been doing it two weeks and it really hasn't been that bad, but we ate a lot of soy products and goat cheese to begin with. If you really miss ice cream, go to someplace like MOM's or Whole Foods for soy or coconut milk ice cream. I also use chocolate soy milk in my coffee. If you're missing the cheese on a cheese burger, there is a vegan cheese called Veggy that is a pretty good approximation of American cheese.
Re: Goodbye Diary
But you still get to keep your diary? That's good!

j/k--sorry to hear about your milk intolerance! Is there nothing you can take for it?

and rice cream is not that bad
can you have soy? I avoided it too

I ate products like bread that contained milk but would not have a cheeseburger b/c of the cheese (regular burger is OK).
DD had a really bad eczema and reflux so I'm not sure about the ratio of side effects to intolerance.
We never had bloody poop, did your pedi say it was from the dairy?
