Birth Stories

For those who have had a VBAC

I'm trying to VBAC this time around.  Quick background on why I had a c-sec with my first:  I had an NST at 40 wk 2d and they decided to get the baby out asap so I had a c-section, never went into labor or had a contraction.

Anyway, today the doctor tells me I can try to VBAC as long as I go into labor on my own. I cannot be induced or receive any drugs to help me progress, pit, etc.

Is this common?   I didn't realize I couldn't be induced at all.  Just curious to see what others have been told or went through.

  • my understanding behind this rule is that allowing your body to go into labor on it's own meant that your body and the baby can tolerate the VBAC.

  • Haven't had one, am in the same situation as you actually.  I have heard/read the same thing.  My understanding is it is mainly because the drugs used for induction could increase the risk of uterine rupture.

If you haven't checked it out yet, the International Cesarean Awareness Network website has a lot of information on VBACs: www.https://www.ican-online.org/

  • My son was a c/s (also never went into labor/had a contraction--he was footling breech so it was scheduled for 38 weeks, 1 day) and I had my daughter vaginally in August.

The hospital I had my daughter at will allow VBACing mamas to have meds and be induced, but I wouldn't do it because of the increased risk of rupture.  (I guess under certain circumstances I might have, but just for the sake of induction or not being on their schedule, I would not).  Anything that is going to induce brings with it the risk of rupture (whether you have had a c/s or not).  Plus, if you have inducing drugs, your liklihood of getting an epidural goes up and then your chance of a vaginal birth goes down (plus, if you were to rupture, would you feel it?).

I would read Heni Goer's The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth.  Very informative.

  • Spontaneous labor is more likely to result in a vaginal birth, but that is true among non-VBAC patients as well.  Pitocin, as well as mechanical forms of induction, like using a foley bulb, are not "not recommended" for VBAC patients.  The studies have been inconsistent.  Some include asymptomatic scar dehiscence among the rupture rates (which results in higher numbers and dehiscence usually causes no problems whatsoever and is different from a true catastrophic rupture, some show a small increase (but still usually 1% or lower) and others have shown no association.

Cervadil and other prostaglandins are not recommended, however.  They believe they soften the scar tissue as well as the cervix and increase the chance of rupture considerably.

  • I tried to VBAC this month and was told the same, I woud have to go into labor on my own. Well I did, and I still ruptured. So in my opinion....if its gonna  happen, its gonna happen.
  • I was a VBAC induced at 41 weeks with Pit (which is considered safe for a VBAC).  Cervadil is not and I was not given that.  I delvered DD safely via incuded VBAC.  I did not go into labor on my own with her.  With DS, I did go into labor on my own and it resulted in a c-section.  Many doctors put lots of restrictions on VBACs for no reason.  I had a supportive midwife.

But as the PP said, there there are people who are in the 1% who rupture so do your homework and do what you feel is right.  I had a wonderful VBAC experience, but some people don't.
