Babies: 0 - 3 Months

goat milk?

I am looking for an alternative to formula.  I will be a SAHM, but am not physically capable of BF, though I wish I could.  I have heard that goat milk is a good alternative because it is easy to digest.  But I need more information.  Has anyone used it?  Pros or cons?  Any other options?

Re: goat milk?

  • i don't know this for sure, but it was my understanding that babies under 6 months (or a year??) can only have BM or formula-as in no cows milk/any other liquid. so i would think goat's milk would fall in to that category of none until older. but like i said, i don't really know......ask your pedi though.

  • You need to discuss this with your Dr. The reason why babies are put on formula is because animal milk alone dose not contain all the nutrients they need to grow and thrive. Even if you google goats milk formula, you'll see that you can't just feed straight goats milk w/out adding other nutrients. There are cow milk based formulas that are easy to digest (Gentlease, Nutriumagin, Alimentum) and are used on colicky babies who don't do well on typical baby formula. But, please, please consult your Dr before just giving your baby plain goat's milk, or even the online formulas- your baby's nutrition isn't something you want to mess with.
  • My mom said that when I was a baby I had to be put on a goat's milk based formula because of reactions I was having to the other formulas. ?This was a last resort type thing. ?She had to have a prescription for it and pick it up at the pharmacy. ?She also said it was super expensive. ?This was in 1981. I haven't heard of anyone today buying this, but it doesn't mean that it's not out there. ?I would try other stuff first and definitely talk to the pedi. ?Good Luck!
