clogged duct is now abscess..experiences???

Long story short, I have an abscess on left breast, basically a clogged duct that got infected. Found out today that aspiration won't do the trick so have to have drainage tubes put in tomorrow. SO s.e.x.y.:(  Has this happened to anyone?? I'm afraid to google b/c I may not sleep tonight.

  • EEK, I have been threatened with this because I still have a milk blister, please report back and let me know how it goes.

  • Will do Babbsy. I was "ok" with it earlier today but the closer it gets the more freaked I am. If this doesn't work, they'll have to do an incision which will just be so gross.

  • i'm sorry. i have had clogged ducts, milk blisters, mastitis twice and thrush for over a month ....but not an abscess... i found info on kellymom.com about it though, i hope the drains help!

  • I was a nurse on oncology for a while, and we had lots of drain bulbs after masectomies.... I will say, NOT as horrible as you think.

If they are the same as what I know, it's a clear'ish bulb, not unlike your booger suckers, lol, and you simply drain it once in a while into the toilet or measuring device if needed, squeeze it a bit to get the air out, and plop it back on the tube going into the tissue.

OK, I realize that sounds gross. But TRUST me... it's not that bad.  be sure to put one end of a safety-pin around the tube, and the other to your clothes so you don't get it yanked. again, if this is the same style as a few yrs back.

we actually used to put cute baby socks on the bulbs sometimes, depending on the patient, to take away from the "ewwww"ness of it, and cover up the drainage.

GL! let me know, at least, if it's different than what I said. I'm curious! ;-)

  • Thanks MrsPresley, I just read it. Dear God I hope my doesn't get to the incision point, as in that article. Surgeon I talked to this morning seemed to think I was heading that way, which is why he is opting for the tubes instead of just aspiration...just to stay on top of it. They drained 23 cc's yesterday and other 13 this morning (just about 14 hours later).

The things we were never told...

  • Ohhh Davez...I'm not good with the ewwness factor. He did mention a bulb this morning, and I was wondering (and afraid to ask) exactly what it would entail on my part. This is just disgusting. Ok, I know you said it wasn't, but it sure the hell sounds disgusting. Must keep DH away entirely...he will never look at me the same!

  • I'm so sorry!  Yes, there are TOO many things they don't warn you about, LOL.  Breast issues were the worst, IMO.  I hope it's relatively uneventful for you and that you feel 100x better afterward!  Good luck!!!
