Postpartum Depression

Anyone take Ativan for anxiety?

I called my OB and she referred me to a therapist and prescribed me Ativan for my anxiety.  Anyone take this med or know anything about it??

Re: Anyone take Ativan for anxiety?

  • Nice to see you over here...sort of... :)

I take it and find it incredibly helpful.  It takes about 10-15 minutes to work, but lasts about four or five hours.  It really  helps me focus and get through that stressful time.  I often want to tell DH to take it! It makes me a bit sleepy, but that actually works for the best when I take it at night.  It means I actually get a full night's rest.

Let me know if you have other ?'s!

  • Ativan for occasional use, short term, is ok.  It can be addicting, but many people need to have it, it works, but really shouldn't be the only medication you have for anxiety.  It should be used to treat break-thru anxiety or panic.  Not as a controller med.  (Gosh, that kind of sounds like an asthma med commercial...)

I had it to take once in awhile, but since my Celexa reached therapeutic levels in my system, I haven't needed to use it.  I am an RN, and would rather use Ativan to quell the anxiety I was having rather than feel what I did again.  It was awful.

Hopefully the therapist referral will help, but you should also ask your OB, or family practice doc, or better yet a psychiatrist about daily meds, such as Zoloft or another SSRI effective against anxiety.

  • I took it as needed for a few months for my panic attacks years ago. It worked well, but I didn't care for it. I started on Klonapin (Clonazepam) and I absolutely love it. I haven't taken it because of pregnancy then attempted breastfeeding, and because I only used to take it as needed anyways. However, it is much better and I love it.
  • I do and I've found it to be a great anti-anxiety med. It works within 30 minutes and it really helps me get a handle on whatever is making me anxious.
  • Yup. I started taking it when I had PPD and I wish I had it years ago. I'm on zoloft but the Ativan really helps when I'm feeling anxious...it takes about 15 minutes to kick in and I take it every one in while.

  • I take it and like how fast it works.....
