Alabama Babies

Consignment sales

The big spring/summer consignment sale is coming up in a few weeks.  I know they sell things other than clothes, but I'm wondering what would be okay to buy second hand?  I know I'm going to look at a bumbo seat, but I'm not sure what else.

Any recommendations on baby items that would be okay to buy second hand? (I'm staying away from strollers and car seats.)

  • I think that the recommended list of things you buy new (like you said) include strollers and car seats and I'd probably go by that.  Car seats especially b/c you don't know if they've been in an accident.  Strollers, I don't really know how bad a used one could be and you could probably save a bunch of money.  However, most ones I've seen at consignment sales are pretty beat up.

"They" (whoever that is) also generally recommend not doing used cribs (unless of course it's from someone you know and trust).  In all honesty though, I think most other things are pretty safe.

You can save a ton buying bigger ticket items (swings, bouncy seats, exersaucers, etc) at consignment sales.  I've gotten some great deals on stuff like that and with the internet, you can usually just go on line and print out whatever "owners manual" or whatever goes with it.  I guess the only potential downside with stuff like that is that if you plan to have several children, it may just be worth buying these new, knowing that you'll get plenty of use out of them.  However, for the grandparents house/ babysitter, whatever, this is the way to go!

And, obviously, you can save a TON on clothes at those sales.  (Can you tell I've turned in to a bit of a consignment sale freak??)  HTH!

  • Oh yeah, and I'd also think that if you want some sort of baby carrier, that's the way to go.  I always see a ton of the Baby Bjorn carriers at these things - for about $15 - $20 instead of $90.  As long as it's something you can wash!  I'm hoping to find an Ergo carrier this way!
  • I love Consignment sales, I just received an email for the first one here in HSV....will someone keep me posted of those in AU and Columbus as my mother lives in opelika?

    Thanks

  • Anything, really!  I always buy a ton of stuff at those sales.  I got a swing, bumbo, clothes, toys, books, bottles, and more for Caleb when he was born.  I would have gotten other things too like a bouncy seat there, but I got stuff as gifts at my baby shower so I didn't have to buy everything myself.  I would have gotten pretty much anything there though...except for a car seat.  That, I wanted brand new. The other things I wouldn't get there would be a breast pump (but plenty of people do) and a crib... I would want that to be new too.  Also the PNP...I wanted that new as well. Basically, anything that requires top safety or cleanliness I would want new, personally. Other things I can think of to get there would be a baby bath tub, decorative things for the nursery like pictures/lamps, swaddling blankets, sippy cups, hooded towels, bath toys.   At the last one, I got a Maclaren stroller for him and I love it.  I LOVE kids consignment sales. Have fun shopping!
  • I am on the counsel for the consignment sale here in Selma and we sale carseats and strollers but we check the recall notices on equipment and expiration dates on carseats. I don't know if all sales do this though so if you were going to purchase a big ticket item I would check the recall list and exp. dates myself. Also I don't know if any of you are close enough to care but the Little Lamb Sale is here in Selma April 14-17. If anyone is interested in selling or attending let me know and I will get you the info. Also if you want to shop and not sale I can get you a New Mommy early bird pass. Just let me know!

  • For anyone in the Florence area, the Wee Swap consignment sale is March 6-10 and the Dittos for Kiddos sale (my favorite) is March 13-20.

In Tuscaloosa, the Little Lambs consignment sale will be held Feb. 26-27.

I am also obsessed about consignment sales! I get about 70 percent of K's clothing from consignment sales each season. I also got her swing (which we still use), her exersaucer, play table, etc. from these sales. The only things I wouldn't get is a carseat or a crib.

  • Bouncers, exersaucer, swing, even a stroller would be good - as long as its not on any recall lists

bassinet (you can buy a new mattress and bedding), books, toys.

Look at bedding sets - when I was at the one here, I saw A TON of them - you might find one you really like and it can all be washed.

I wouldn't buy clothes since you will probably get a LOT and many times those sales are seasonal.

     Look for maternity clothing though.
