My bjorn hurt my back and the sling did not. The bjorn puts the weight right on your back where the sling moves the weight between you back and shoulder.
I hated my Bjorn after my dd weighed more than about 12 lbs!! It killed my back and stomach as she got heavier. It was hard to put her in. I had a hotslings that I prefered over it. This time around I am going for a Baby K'tan! If you do go for a Bjorn, I would get one at a consignment sale or find one on clearance as I don't think you can use them for a long time.
The Bjorns don't hold the baby properly...putting strain on your back! They pretty much have the baby hanging by their crotch area, which is obviously not right. There are other great carriers out there though..like the Ergo, Beco, etc...
Slings give the little ones the feeling of being kinda squished and cozy like they're back in the womb! But you can use most of them in different carrying positions as the get bigger if it's comfy for you.
The bjorn style DS hated. DD had blood vessels in her legs that were more superficial than normal, so it cut off her circulation. And yes, it puts all the pressure on your back.
The sling I still occasionally use with my DD, who is almost 3 and over 30lbs.

I LOVE MY BJORN! I used it from the day we brought DD home until I got too pregnant to carry her anymore. I tried a sling, but DD hated it. She liked to be upright. It can cause back pain if you don't have the straps adjusted correctly. I actually registered for another one. I think they are able to be in a bjorn until 25 lbs. HTH!
