questions about GD diet...my dietian was useless

so, you ladies seem to understand this better than the dietian at the hospital so i'm asking y'all.

first, will me NOT having enough protien, even if limiting my carbs mean higher blood sugars?

is it a problem if i skip a snack?  i was very busy at work today and didn't eat snacks.  my blood sugars today where the highest they have been so far.  i don't know if they are just crawling up, stress related or if it's due to skipping snacks.  i guess only time will tell but just seeing if anyone has experience with this.

  • For me low fat protein definitely helps me digest the carbs much better.  My OB did warn me that for some people stress and caffeine can both cause BS to go up.

Try to make sure you have convenient snacks around because it isn't a good idea to skip.  I've had good luck with some of the Atkins bars.  You have to check the labels though, because they are not all created equal.  I like the Peanut Fudge Granola Bars.  They have 17g of carbs, 16g of protein, and 200 calories.

  • the way I understand it- snacks are very important.  If you skip then your blood sugar dips low which you don't want.  6 small meals are what they want.  Have some crackers and nuts with you when you get busy.

  • Low-fat sources of protein in meals and having snacks are both very important.  First, the proteins help fill you up so you won't want more carbs, and they digest more slowly to help you feel full longer.  Second, having the between-meal snacks helps balance your blood sugar all day so that you don't swing between really low sugars pre-meal and high sugars after meals.  If your snack can include some protein (cheese, peanut butter, etc.), you will have the fullness effect longer and not be as hungry by the time you get to a meal.
