As a teacher, I am a state employee. Delaware recently raised it's elimination period for STD to 60 days, which effectively cancelled us having paid maternity leave. So I was looking into Aflac, as a private policy, but just read this on their website:
"The term complications of pregnancy does not include premature delivery without incidence, multiple gestation pregnancy, false labor, occasional spotting, prescribed rest during pregnancy, morning sickness, and similar conditions associated with the management of a difficult pregnancy but not constituting a classifiably distinct pregnancy complication. Cesarean deliveries are not considered complications of pregnancy." As someone who was high risk and will be for all future pregnancies, this doesn't sound to me like anything other than 6 or 8 weeks of postpartum is covered. Am I reading it correctly? Does anyone currently have a policy through them? It seems like kind of a waste if it doesn't even cover bed rest! Mary
Re: Aflac, anyone?
I have a 3 month disability coverage through them- my rep said that the cover the 6-8 weeks for maternity leave, but if bed rest is required the most the will cover is 3 months. I had thought about upping my plan to cover 6 month.
I also have a hospital plan that reimburses me for surgeries (c-section $500) and a daily hospitalization rate of $150 which should come in handy for paying the hospital bill!
Hope that helps!
