I called the nurse today to see what the results were from my 3 hour, and got the bad news. She "explained" what would happen next, something about talking with somebody about meals and possibly checking my blood with a machine. I am not sure what all she was talking about, but she did tell me that she thought my insurance would NOT cover this stuff. Is this typical? I feel so stressed and overwhelmed, and afraid to put anything in my mouth. I cannot face talking with ppl I know irl right now, so I am turning to you girls. I feel somewhat depressed about the whole thing.![]()
Re: Just diagnosed with gd...now what?
At my meeting with the dietician they supplied the meter which they get from the meter companies at no cost to me. The strips and lancets are a prescription so they might cover that. The lancets were fairly cheap, but the strips are $140/200 my insurance covered 1/2, I think they'll cover it 90/10 now, b/c I think it made us meet our deductible.
I have United Healthcare PPO
Maybe other people can share their insurance companies policies
My monitor was given to me at not cost with 2 days worth of strips and lancets - when I went to fill the RX my pharmacist told me the strips alone (full price) are $1 per strip... I paid $10 for 100 and my insurance covered the rest. Not sure how much the lancets are full price but I paid $15 for 100. We have Premera insurance... you probably want to call your ins co to make sure.
ETA: Don't feel depressed as it's REALLY not as bad as your doctor may have made it sound - before I learned what I was really dealing with I kind of felt the same way though so I know it's hard. Hopefully after meeting with your nutritionist and you get set up with your monitor you'll feel better about it. If you have more questions please feel free to ask because it is all pretty confusing!

You can do it. I understand feeling upset and overwhelmed though. I got the call last Thursday. I changed my diet immediately by looking at meal plans online.
I had to pay $45 for the class at the diabetic center-- that was after my insurance covered the rest. I was given the monitor for free. The supplies that go with the monitor were called in by my OB and we paid $28 out of pocket for 100 test strips and 100 needles. Without insurance it would have been over $100. I'd assume that your insurance will definitley cover this.
Here are a the websites that helped me figure it out before I had my class.
