Weight gain

I asked my MFM today how much weight I should gain.  I was curious to know; I was fairly certain he is not of the Dr. Luke camp.  My BMI is 25.  He said 25 lbs total for the pregnacy!

Ha!  He's very conservative with weight.  By my calculation, that's basically all baby, placenta, amniotic fluid, maternal blood volume.  I will be shocked if I am actually able to do it!

Re: Weight gain

  • That seems very low.  I question that doctor's credentials.  My doc by no means agrees with Dr Luke, but to say you only need to gain what is recommended for a singleton pregnancy is silly

  • He is my colleague and the best MFM I know. I have worked with at least 2 dozen MFMs and I trust him over them all.  But I still think 25 lbs is not possible.

I don't know if it's not possible, as much as it is not healthy.  I just don't think that would be enough weight for twins.  My OB and peri said between 45 and 50.  Right now I'm at 40.  My babies are both over 6 lbs right now so I'm happy I listened

  • That's why I was totally shocked at 25.  It's not like I am overweight to start with.  I was also thinking 40 lbs.  This will be very interesting!!
  • Damn.  Good luck with that.  I was up almost 25 at 20 weeks.  Embarrassed

I probably could have eaten better if I didn't have morning sickness for so long.  Until week 18 or so, I was eating anything I could keep down which was lots of snack mix and Kraft Mac & Cheese.  I wish veggies and hummus and stuff like that sounded good at first...

  • my dr said NO LESS than 40... I started at 120 pounds and have gained 30 and am 32 weeks.
  • My doc recommended 35 pounds (but is very relaxed about weight) and I gained 42-48 and was never told that it was too much or not enough).
  • I started out about 5lbs underweight and was told about 40lbs. So far I have gained about 30 at almost 33 weeks and neither MFM or OB seems concerned. At 20wks I had only gained 12lbs and was put on a Dr. Luke-ish high protein/high fat diet by MFM. I have eased up on that diet now since I am nearing delivery

Yeah ... sorry, but that recommendation makes zero sense to me, and really concerns me a bit. :( Has he done much research specifically into weight gain for multiple pregnancies? Sadly few OBs and even MFMs have.

  • I would really focus on protein and on gaining at least 20 lbs by 20 weeks, and really eating well after that. I gained 54 lbs total and while I would have loved to gain closer to 40, my babies were born very healthy, 6lbs10oz and 6lbs7oz, at 37w6d. Worth every moment of effort to lose the weight afterward!  And it's not like gaining 40 lbs would put you and the babies at risk; is there research that indicates that for twin pregnancies? I would be very surprised.

  • My doc never gave me a recommendation, which honestly doesn't concern me.  I know that he'll tell me if he's unhappy, and I know what feels healthy for my own body (helps that I started off a bit overweight, too).

I haven't even managed to gain 10lbs yet, FWIW.

  • My Dr. had never told me any specific weight gain, but when I asked he also told me 25 lbs- 30 lbs he advised me that just because I was having two I didn't need to reach a "weight goal" I'm sure other posters might disagree and that's fine.  He also said the babies would take from me what was needed so I didn't focus on any particular weight gain I just ate when I was hungry and tried to make good food choices and gained 40 lbs.

  • I never really discussed weight gain with my MFM -- I went to Dr. Kirshon -- who are you seeing?

Anyway, he never weighed me, but I did gain 70 lbs, and neither he nor my OB gave a damn.  I was slightly underweight to begin with (125lbs and 5'8"), and I lost it all w/in 6 months pretty easily.

I wouldn't worry about the weight thing too much, and would just focus on eating lots of protein.

  • I picked my OB based on the fact that she said from the outset she wouldn't hound me about weight. Concentrate on lots of protein and let the weight come. I gained 60 lbs and lost 50 within 7 days!

  • I am suprised at this too.  I was told by several OBS (have them in the family as well as my OB) and my mfm that it was at least 35-45 lbs and I started out with a BMI of 23.  I am at 50 right now and as of this morning I am carrying an estimate of two 6 pounders, so I am happy with my weight gain.  my OB is happy with it too.  I will say I didn't try to gain weight I just ate well and more, though they do say you need at least 300 calories more per baby, so regardless of the weight goal, trying to eat an extra 600 good calories and see what your body does.
  • Neither my OB nor my MFM are sticklers for weight.  They both reccomended 35-45 lbs. I am already pushing 30 and they have not said a thing. My MFM hands out Dr. Lukes book but did say 3500 calories a day is a little much.

  • oy.  I'm at 16w and a few days and still down 4 lbs.  My OB is not concerned, as I started very o/weight (32 bMI).  I know I need to gain for them, and I'm certainly not worried about body image while pregnant, but I'm still very sick.  She didn't give me a weight gain target, but said my body would do what it needed to do, and I need to try my best to nourish it.  I'm going to ask at my next appt.  Now I'm worried that I'm not gaining enough.

  • That seems in line for a singleton preg, not multiple. I gained 34 lbs with my babies.

  • I was told between 35-45 lbs. Think I'm alittle ahead of the game.
