Adoption

Where did you start

Im very interested into looking into adoption. DH and I was 2 or 3 kids and after a very not easy  pregnancy and L&D I really dont think I can do it again. I have always been interested in adoption any way so would like to look into it. DH is against it but he also knows NOTHING about it and I think he would come around he is just scared of the unknown. We want our kids very close together and I know it can be a long process so I think we are already a little late on looking into it. What websites are good reputable sites to look at? tia ladies

Re: Where did you start

  • I would recommend the book Adoption for Dummies - there's lots of good information in there. Also a lot of adoption agencies have informational session that you can attend just to hear about the process and what they can offer.

  • Ditto. Read the book together and discuss any concerns you both have. You need to have DH on board before you proceed.
  • Adoption for Dummies is good.  Another basic book on adoption that I found helpful was "You Can Adopt: An Adoptive Families Guide."  It's put together by the editors of Adoptive Families magazine.
  • My blog has a ton of links in it for books and websites to help you get started.  Link in siggy.

  • We are starting with reading as many books as we can and talking to others about their experiences. The next step will be attending information sessions.

  • The Child Welfare Information Gateway is a great website with many links to info about the basic process for domestic, foster to adopt, and international adoption, as well as resources for making choices in your adoption process (how do you choose domestic vs. international, etc- how do you locate a reputable agency...): https://www.childwelfare.gov/adoption/

https://www.adoption.org/ offers easy to understan explanations of various processes and resources.

You can also visit your state's department of public welfare website (child welfare services or such) which will list resources specific to your state.

    Good luck!
