I BF DD fairly successfully. However, my L breast was a dud. I'm concerned about how that will effect nursing twins, let along tandem nursing.
If you BF an older child, did you have 1 breast that produced significantly more than the other? Was it a problem when it came time to BF twins?
Re: BFing ? again, specifically for MoMs with an older kid
After talking to a LC about this, unfortunately it isn't uncommon to have an uneven supply like that. I'm the same way. My right gives about half of what my left can.
All you can do is do your best to up the supply on the other side: offer that breast often, pump from that side often, etc. Sometimes it is just a physical issue with the breast: less tissue, etc., but you can do your best to work around it.
I would try not to worry about it unless it becomes a problem.
I BFed my DS and my left side wasn't a true "dud" but didn't produce nearly as much as the right.
This time around (and it's only been 3 weeks, so I suppose this could change), they seem to be fairly even. I haven't mastered tandem nursing yet, but I feed one baby on one side and then the other baby on the other side and switch them around the next feeding. So it seems to even everything out.
When I pump I seem to get just about the same amount on both sides. So, I think you can totally have a different experience the 2nd time around.
I could have written this post a few months ago. I EBF DD#1 for 12 months. Lefty always produced less then the other. By the time I stopped nursing you could even SEE the difference. So I was worried.
When the twins were born I was very aware that I needed to pump up good ol Lefty. So I pumped after just hours...pumped after trying to feed the girls each time. M latched right away so I started putting her on the left side to help out (it took K 2ish weeks before BFing...I was pumping). So I would BF M while bottle feeding K pumped milk then pump the side she didnt eat off of for Ks next meal.
Once they were both BFing full time for the first 3 months my piggly wiggly ate ONLY from lefty.....she built me up. lol Now they switch back and forth since I its still more work on the left. I realize now that its not that I could not produce milk on the left as much as the right but that i have more open ducts on the right so it was easier for DD#1 to nurse on that side...so her demand made my produce less on that side.
Now that I switch them back and forth I produce the same amount. GL
wow....that was long. sorry
