Dr. Luke's breastfeeding nutrition guidelines

160 g of protein!!!  I ate eggs with breakfast, a chicken and cheese sandwich for lunch, a yogurt for a snack (along with some other things!)... and I'm still only up to 47 g (I know this because I'm trying out the calorie counter and food diary app on my phone today).

The US Dept. of Agriculture recommends a normal breastfeeding woman consume 65 g, so I'm thinking they'd say maybe 80 for twins.

Holy cow... how are you supposed to consume 160 g of protein?!?!?  There's no way that's ever going to happen for me.  I already have to force myself to eat more meat than I'd prefer, and I don't like milk, although I'll drink it.

Re: Dr. Luke's breastfeeding nutrition guidelines

  • I have come to the conclusion that Dr. Luke's book sets ridiculous food intake goals in hopes that it will push you to try to get at least 1/2 of what she recommends in and strive towards 2/3.  So, I think 80-100g would be great.  Also, the calorie counter and food diary is only accurate if you weigh your food.  6 oz of chicken is a lot less than you may think and so is 8 oz of milk.  A glass of milk is actually a lot closer to 12-16 oz, which pack in double the protein.

  • I have no clue, but I could never in two million years consume that much protein.  As a vegetarian who hates eggs, tofu, etc. I struggle to get 40 g in!

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • I'm sure you're doing fine!  Especially if your girls are gaining weight and seem happy, I wouldn't worry too much about getting more protein than what you described.  Your girls are adorable, by the way!!  I love their names, and I'm glad everything seems to be working well for you so far!  Adding twins to the mix with two toddlers at home is challenging, I know, but you seem to have survived so far :)  It just gets better - trust me!!

i just read the part last night where she says to try and eat 2 servings of red meat a day and that it was ok to eat ice cream before bed every night.  is this for real?!?!  i would vomit if i ate all that red meat and had real ice cream.  does anyone follow dr. luke's guidelines for eating?  i'm all about feeding the little ones, but seriously, i don't know if i can eat ALL that she says.
