Preemies

do you use a jumperoo/exersaucer?

yesterday we went to a neurodevelopment appt for the girls.  i expected they would match very well with their adjusted age of about 6mos, and they did!  so, very happy about that, and very grateful too!

for one of the tests they hold your baby like when you're flying her around above your head.  ours keep themselves straight like a board.  the nurse called this "super baby".  apparently full term babies will pull more into fetal position.  this is because full term babes spent more time in fetal position inutero stretching their back muscles.  preemies didn't have that time, so their backs are more "tight".  i think she called it high tone.

so they recommend NOT to use a jumperoo, or similar until babies are pulling up and standing on their own.

so just wondering have any of you had similar advice?  or what are your thoughts on this?

  • We aren't there yet, but someone ( I want to say kkh?) posted about high tone a few days ago! Check the back pages!

  • i haven't heard that. we have a jumperoo, our dev. ped and pt know about it.. they didn't suggest against it... i'll have to ask...
  • We have both and at our NICU eval they didn't say anything against it.  I mentioned it when they asked what games etc we play with DD and kind of expected them to say something, but they didn't.  I actually noticed that DD did the "super baby" thing but I was actually congratulating her because I thought it was a sign of good upper body/head control.  Who's the fool now? :)

  • we do have a jumperoo and our PT was okay with it within limits. She didnt' want him in it more than about 20 minutes/day. The studies do show that children who use them walk later than those who don't, but apparently that more extended us.

That being said, We hardly ever put Robbie in it. He *LOVED* the thing, but I didn't want to stunt him too much since he was struggling anyway. But it was my "I need 20 freaking minutes to myself" emergency go-to.

  • We were told it was ok in small doses and that was exactly how we used it.  20 minutes every so often or so.

  • We were told no jumperoo ever by the NICU developmental team.  We do use an exersaucer but limit it to 30 min./day and it's not recommended either by our PT or OT, but it really helps them poop so we do it.  I work in EI and it's really really important that your babies spend as much time as possible on the floor on their tummy.  They will develop much better skills than if they are frequently in "containers" including highchairs, bouncers, swings, bumbos (huge no no in our field), etc.

a friend lent us her bumbo, but we hardly ever use it.  i had no idea though that they're counterproductive.  i guess i'm glad they are on the floor so much!

  • Georgia's PT was against it and firmly stated to use it as a last resort type thing and for only 15-20 minutes per day.  Georgia is constantly on the floor, playing and exercising with her Dad during the day and that's made a huge difference (rolling over, sitting unassisted, pulling up earlier than expected).

  • My mom bought Carter an exersaucer a couple weeks ago and he LOVES it.  For a couple weeks before that all he wanted to do is STAND, all day...no sitting (and he still only wants to stand).  I've heard (from ppl on here) about limiting their time in it, so I just put him in it for a few minutes at a time throughout the day, but he goes NUTS jumping around, playing with the toys (he LOVES to chew on them), etc.  It is definitely his happiest time of the day.

We also do "super baby" (he loves this too) - sometimes he's super stiff and other times he curls up.  I also was one who thought the stiff was good!  Oops

     Exactly this :)

  • our physical therapist actually told us that "super baby" was an alternative to belly time. (not totally of course! but that since she HATES belly time, we can work her core and neck by doing the superbaby during the day as well.) i guess i should say "superbaby was good to do in addition to belly time."
  • i should add that before we went to this appt. our ped has been against using these until 9mos adjusted... but he wouldn't say why.

  • LO's PT said no jumparoo or exersucer no questions asked. We are also not allowed to stand him up and bear weight on his legs.  However I do have a very stiff baby who hates to even bend to sit in your lap.
  • My PT actually lent us her exersaucer to get DD to put weigh on her legs. Still recommended using it in small doses.
