High-Risk Pregnancy

New/Advice Needed- PTL at 33 weeks

Hi everyone I new to this board. Everything has gone great with my pregnancy up until now. I appreciate that a lot of the women here have gone through hell but if anyone has gone through anything similar right now I am really looking for info/experiences. I am about 33.5 weeks now and have been hospitalized twice in the past two weeks for shortening cervix, 50% effaced, baby is at 1+ station with contractions, cramping, etc. They got the contractions to slow down and I got the steroid injections to speed up the baby's lungs maturity but they told me when I left yesterday that they won't do anything after I hit 34 weeks later this week to stop the labor next time. I am really hoping to make it much farther along but I don't know how much I can control it? I am on bedrest and guzzling major water. Still having pelvic pain, cramping but only irregular contractions. Is anyone going through/have gone through this? Or know how well babies born at 34 weeks really do? I am just a nervous wreck, thank you to anyone who can give me any insight. The doctors just don't have many answers for me right now...

I wish you lots of luck on getting to 4 more weeks. i think you and the LO will make it!

  • I had my first son at 34 weeks, my water broke and then the contractions started. There wasnt enough time for the shots for his lungs since he came out so fast. He was in the hospital for 4 days due to jondice but otherwise perfectly healthy. He is almost 8 now and as big as a 10-11 yr old.My t & p are w/u. I know how this feels and wish you luck.
  • I have been hospitalized the last two weekends for PTL. I'm 2cm dilated, 80% effaced and still very crampy with contractions. I got the steroid shot at like 29 weeks. I have been very reassured by several doctors that if I were to deliver my LO would most likely be just fine, she would just have to stay in NICU for a few weeks to grow. I had a specialist come in and talk to us and said babies delivered at 32 weeks usually only have to stay in NICU for 2 weeks so I can imagine 34 is that much better. I am praying to make it to 34! I think with the steroids if you were to deliver at 34wks your LO would be healthy! GL!

  • My water broke at 34 weeks and they didn't stop the labor because, as I was told my several nurses and doctors in L&D, 34 weekers do great.  My daugther was born at 34w1d and is now a perfectly happy, healthy 2yo.  She spent 13 days in the NICU because she needed to learn to eat (the suck/swallow/breath reflex often isn't present that young).  Surprise, surprise - the girl is still a pain to feed!  Not because of any health issues, she's just picky!

If it makes you feel better, I am currently 35w pregnant with #2.  Last week (at 34w 2d) my peri said that, while his preference would be that I can hold out until at least 36w, he wouldn't be a bit concerned about the health of the baby whenever I delivered.

  • I had a 34 weeker exactly. My water broke and ctx started a few hours later. She was 4 lbs 5 oz and 17 inches long and spent 15 days in the nicu. Needed no oxygen, she just had feeding issues and jaundice, had to be under the bili light for a week. She couldn't eat much and couldn't maintain her temp. ONce all of that was mature enough she went home. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. Developmentally she is perfect, she is still little but we are working on it.
  • Thank you to everyone who responded. There are a lot of strong amazing women out there and just want to wish the best and luck to everyone going through issues!
  • T&P with you too! I understand it is best for babies to say in there a bit longer but personally I would not be worried about 34 week delivery. My brother and I were both born at 34 weeks and we are both healthy. I have a friend who had a baby at 32 weeks and also one at 33 weeks and they are both fine as well. They were small at first but eventually caught up. Best of luck to you!!!!!
