those who have preemies - jumperoo/exersaucers

yesterday we went to a neurodevelopment appt for the girls.  i expected they would match very well with their adjusted age of about 6mos, and they did!  so, very happy about that, and very grateful too!

for one of the tests they hold your baby like when you're flying her around above your head.  ours keep themselves straight like a board.  the nurse called this "super baby".  apparently full term babies will pull more into fetal position.  this is because full term babes spent more time in fetal position inutero stretching their back muscles.  preemies didn't have that time, so their backs are more "tight".  i think she called it high tone.

so they recommend NOT to use a jumperoo, or similar until babies are pulling up and standing on their own.

so just wondering have any of you had similar advice?  or what are your thoughts on this?

  • Sorry, I don't have an answer for you, but you may have better luck with this question on the preemies board, since there are a lot more ladies there that may have an answer for you.

thanks, i just posted over there as well.  but part of the reason i posted here is that there are both views... preemies and more full term.  maybe some moms will say, "my full term baby does that superbaby thing too."

  • the phys.therapist at my hospital told me no walkers, no jumpers, no exersaucers ever.  Bwahahahahaha!  My boys (32 weekers) were in those things as soon as they were able to bear weight on their legs and had good head control!  They are doing really well now (almost 14 months).  FWIW, I asked my pedi about it after the PT said this and she laughed too.  She did say, though, to limit time in there to no more than an hour a day (no more than 1/2 hr at a time).  It was a great way for me to know that I could wash some dishes or run a load of laundry and not worry that they were getting into something, you know?  good luck!
  • Same as pp, my one LO only wanted to stand (still does) and so I would put her in the exersaucer.  They NICU dr told me not to but I did anyway.  She loved it and still does.  Now she has much better control and I put her in the jumperoo and exersaucer.  Same with the other one now as well.  I do limit their time in there to no more than 30 min at a time.
