***Maddie***

I didn't want to hijack the post below, but wanted to tell you that there are a lot of reasons why a dog can stink.  The first one I thought of is that his anal glands may need to be expressed.  These two articles include a lot of others:

If you haven't already, it may be a good idea to take the pooch to a vet to find out if there are any medical reasons for his smelliness.

Re: ***Maddie***

  • Thanks.. that was my first thought when we got him from the pound last january (yup.. we've been dealing with a rancid dog for a year).  So I had him groomed and they expressed his glands, brushed his teeth.  He was fine for like 3 days.. then the odor came back.  We took him to the vet and she did it again, cleaned his ears.. yada, yada.  Still he stinks.    The vet suggested we make him an outside dog.. but I just couldn't do that.  Its cold outside!!

I think we are going to have to try a medicate shampoo for like dermititis (sp?) which can cause excessive oiliness and odor.

This is Wendell the night I got him last January.image

He was soo skinny you could see his rib cage!

Here he is today.. much happier and healthier (but sadly still my stinkmeister):

  • Oh, what a cutie!  I think you're right on, thinking his smell must be due to skin issues--especially given what you said about his oiliness.  Poor stinky baby!
  • he is such a stinky man!!
