3rd Trimester

U/S tech told me weight of baby - question?

I had to have an ultrasound yesterday because I have been spotting.  The doctor told me that everything with me and the baby is okay - thank God.  The U/S tech said the baby weighs approximately 4lbs. 3 ounces.  My questions is how accurate is this prediction?  Any mom's have their baby and the weight was / was not accurate?  Just curious!  Thanks ladies.

Re: U/S tech told me weight of baby - question?

  • I was told these guesses are +/- 7oz.

  • They can be way off. It's really just an estimate.
  • Well, that is how much your baby should be weighing at this point. So thats good. On the other hand, they told me that DS was going to be close to nine pounds.... he was 6 11 at birth and I was 2 weeks overdue. I lived in a really rural area at the time however, and they didnt have very good ultrasound mechines, no 3d or anything.
  • I had an ultrasound to check the level of my fluids the day before I had DD#1, and I did not know I was going to have her the next day, and the U/S measured her at 6.5 lbs and she was 6 lbs even.

I heard it depends on the machine, too.

  • I know that the weight estimates can be REALLY off. My co-worker, who goes to a very well respected practice in town, was told she had an 11 lb baby, and had a c-section. They baby ended up being 6.5 lbs.
  • My SIL had a growth u/s three days before her baby was born.  They said he was 6 lbs 9 oz.  He ended up being 8 lbs 8oz.  So, yeah, they can be way off.
  • I had a u/s today and was told he weighed 4 lbs 11 oz +/- a lb.
  • They measured DD to be 9Ibs 6oz, and she was 8Ibs even. It's really just a guessing game.

  • they told me the day they induced me that he was waaaay over 8 lbs for sure. he was 7lbs even.

so when my friend got upset that her docs were saying her baby boy was going to be over 10lbs i told her 8 1/2 tops. he was 8lbs 9oz.

don't listen to the machines or the techs as you near the end... :) your baby is doing just fine.

  • estimate at 36w 7-1...born at 40w 9 pounds even. So for us, it was right on.

I kept telling myself  the u/s was way off, because I was only 6-5 at birth, and was anticipating a 7, maybe 8 pounder. I needed to be in denial about pushing out a 9 pounder lol.

  • at DDs growth u/s they said she'd be 7.5lbs at birth....she was 6.6 lbs

  • It depends on the machine and how many body parts they're measuring.  It bugs me that people say it's just a guess.  It's not a guess, it's an average.  Your baby's arm could be measuring 32w5d while his head could be measuring 33w6d.  His head might not be in a good position to get an accurate measurement.  He could move his leg at the last second.  The machine takes an average of all measurements.  If your tech takes sloppy measurements that could throw it off too.
  • I was told these estimates are within 1lb + or -
