If your LO is literally "little"

Has your pedi told you to do anything in particular to try to get more calories into him/her? DD is 28" and just over 18 pounds. She doesn't look "too skinny" and is doing great in general, but I wonder if I should be doing anything about her size. We don't go in for her next checkup until Feb. 20.She eats a variety of foods but it's hard to get a lot into her. She's never taken big bottles, either. I feed her as much as she will eat.

I was a small baby and she looks a lot like DH who looks like MIL, and MIL was always small, but I don't want to drop any balls.

Re: If your LO is literally "little"

  • Mine is small, but she had undiagnosed hypothyroidism for a couple months...it wasn't until she lost weight that the pedi tested her for things. She's doing great now, and is a big eater, but she's still small. If your pedi isn't worried, I'd just continue doing what you're doing.

  • We've got a "little" one, but he's been growing faster now!

Our pedi recommended adding butter or olive oil to veggies/pasta, lots of sunflower seed butter, beans.

  • small people generally make small babies. that is just how it works. if she is still gorwing and eating and active then I would not worry about it. DS is only 29 3/4inches.he is the shortest in his class. granted he is the youngest, only by 3 months, but he is a good 2 inches shorter then everone else.

  • DS is pretty tiny also, I believe his is %3 for weight and %10 for height.  We do not do anything special to try to increase his weight.  His pedi is not concerned as long as he stays on his growth curve.
  • Mine is right at 17.5 but 32 inches, so she is pretty little.  They aren't worried about her though, as she has stayed consistent in her growth patterns.  She was 4 pounds at birth but 19.5 inches tall!

  • My girls are only 17.5 and 18.5 lbs. I'm very concerned because my littler one barely grew from her year checkup. The dr has me increasing her calories for the next month, then possibly bloodwork. She's always been very tiny (she's short too).
  • Thanks. I guess I will see what happens at one year. Am thinking of taking her in for a shot-only appt before her check-up and will talk to them then about her weight. She's been slowly dropping off her original curve, I think. DH and I are average size now, but I was a small baby.

  • My little guy isn't on the growth curve at all...but he's on his own curve, so to speak.  He still gains, just slowly.  We had all kinds of blood work done, and he's completely healthy.  DH and I were both small babies, so it's just what we do I guess.  Our dr isn't concerned, so neither are we anymore.
