What to do..babywise babies skipping feedings??

So I know I keep asking questions related to schedules (please forgive me, and thank you for your patience)...

The babies were doing well on a 3 hour schedule but now they want to skip their 2nd feeding or eat just 1-2 oz (around 8 or 9 am) then at their early evening feeding (5-6pm) they won't eat at all.

How am I supposed to keep babywise routine (sleep-eat-play) if they refuse to eat?

What do you do when your babies refuse to eat? do they ever do this?

Re: What to do..babywise babies skipping feedings??

  • only Gray has ever refused to eat- and it's because he has reflux - is there a chance they have reflux? do they fuss while eating at all? even if they are not spitting up a lot, can be silent reflux if it's just painful for them to eat (that is what Gray has).

if they skip their bottle- do they wait until the next feeding? or want to eat an hour later?

  • Loading the player...
  • They don't normally fuss when eating (only once in a while and it is more wiggling than fussing... )  Sometimes they will skip it completely and other times they will want to eat 1-2 hours later.

ex: yesterday they ate at 1:20pm (6oz) and were going to eat again at 4:30 or so but they refused until 6:30...

  • which then messed up bedtime a little because they obviously weren't hungry at 8:00 (their usual last bottle).  We ended up dream feeding them at 9:00 - and it worked great, they slept until 6:15am....

I guess I'm worried about why they don't want to eat as a whole as well as the schedule thing...

  • As they grow, they will naturally space out their feedings.  My two, also near 5 mos now, go 5+ hrs during the mid-day (and sleep for about 4 hrs).  They eat about about 7a & 11a then about 5p and 8:30-9p  They sleep typically 9:30 p-7a.

I like babywise as a pattern, not as a rigid schedule. I've used that pattern with all 4 kids and it works great, but also realize babies go thru many growth spurts/sleep-wakeful periods, and you'll have to accommodate that.

  • yeah- it sounds like they are just stretching things out a little more.  Don't focus on what time of day it is on the clock- just the rotation of the activity being sleep/eat/play... my boys don't nap at the same time each day... their bed time varies from about 7-8pm... they do usually eat at the same times- but certain days it varies- and I'm OK with that.... just go with the flow :)
