Question for Premie Moms/What to expect

First, I want to apologize if this post is out of line since I am not a premie Mom. I think you are all amazying with the things you have gone through with your little ones and I can't even imagine the struggles you have had. If this is an inappropriate post please let me know and I will delete it ASAP.

I have been having issues with pre term labor for 2 weeks, now at 33.5 weeks. They've been able to stop the labor and given me the steroid injections for the baby's lungs, but they said once I reach 34 weeks this weekend they won't give me anything to stop things anymore. It seems really early to me so I just wanted to reach out and see if I could hear any experiences of moms that had their little ones around 34 weeks to find out what I can expect... the doctor's really can't give me much because anything can really happen at this point.

Thanks again in advance to anyone who reads/responds :)

  • No need to apologize! You will find that the ladies over here could care less about "flaming" posts, or any of the other bs you will find on the tri boards!

It's great that you got the steroid injections! I don't have a 34 weeker, but I do want to recommend doing a NICU tour, if thats possible. I tell every soon to be preemie mom this, because it is something I wish I had been able to do. GL! You have done a great job keeping your baby in there so far! (HUGS!!!)

  • My DD2 was born at 33w4d and spent 11 days in the NICU. She required one round of surfactant (I didn't get any steroid injections beforehand) and 6 hours of supplemental oxygen. She then alternated between room air and CPAP with no supplemental oxygen. She spent 2 days under the bili lights for jaundice.  After that she was deemed a "feeder and grower". She learned to maintain her own body temp and nurse for every meal for 24 hours. She got discharged as soon as she could do that.

  • if you should want details, check my blog, but my 33 weeker was basically a very slow feeder grower who did amazingly well.  Hope you bake that baby longer and don't need to join us!
  • i had my daughter 5 weeks early. one night i was having contractions from about midnight to 1230am and before i even knew i was in labor my water broke. right then i was terrified because i knew my daughter was soooo early. i was very scared at how many problems she could have. but to everyone's surprise (doctor and nurses). my daughter was 100% healthy. She had no problems other than jaundice and she was under the light in the nursery for 24 hrs and we were in the hospital for 4 days to monitor her. but she was great. we had to give her formula the first week she was born because she wasnt breastfeeding yet and lost a little bit of weight. but by week 2 she was breastfeeding and is continuing to do awesome! she is 3 months old now. so you never know what may or may not happen.
  • my daughter was a 27 weeker- like night and day from a 34-35 weeker! so don't worry, most of what we went through won't even be a concern for your lo. i went into the hospital at about 26 weeks, and they had the neos come in every week and talk about risks/problems for that age gestation- it changes so much day by day.

but, you're welcome to check out my blog for general nicu information, suggestions, definitions etc.

hoping you get to be really fat and uncomfortable at a full 40 weeks! :)

  • At 33.5 weeks, it was discovered I had low amniotic fluid.  They wanted to get me to 34 weeks and then deliver the baby.  My daughter was born at 34 weeks exactly. She weighed 4 lbs. 7oz.   She was on CPAP for a day.  No jaundice. She was in the NICU for 19 days as basically a "feeder and grower".  My daughter was a HUGE sleeper.  They finally realized she would not even wake up to eat.  She would literally eat and sleep at the same time.  Good luck and I hope your little guy stays baking for many more weeks!
