Growth u/s on Friday - what to expect?

I know the obvious thing that they are looking at is the size of LO.  What percentile is good @ 34 wks?

Other than size what else are they looking for?

Thanks ladies!

  • Your weight %-tile goal is always 50%

    good luck!

  • I'm not sure if this is what you're asking, but I'll give it a shot.

Percentile just means the average size for a baby of that gestational age.  My LO measured in the 41% at week 32, which they said was normal and good.  I'm not sure what the upper and lower % limits are or where they start to get concerned, though.

All they did at my growth scan was take measurements, which the computer then used to calculate his weight.  She also said his fluid levels looked good, and she saw him practice breathing, which was good, but I don't know if those things were really part of the protocol or if she was just commenting on what she saw. HTH!

    Yep, that's what I was asking. :)

Ok that makes sense.  I guess, when would they be really concerned as far as size goes??

  • I think they are concerned if it's under 20% and over 80%, but I wouldn't quote me on that! My boys have both been about at the 50th%-ile so I didn't keep that information in my head :) For my boys they were more worried about the difference between the percentiles (size discordance) so that's what I remembered most.

I ask a ton of questions when I'm there :) The u/s techs have not gotten annoyed with me yet! Anything you are concerned about I would ask at your growth u/s and see what they say :)

Thanks!  I will be sure to ask if I have questions.  I will see my doctor right after my u/s so I'm glad about that.

  • At my growth scan a couple weeks ago all he did was take measurements to try to determine the baby's weight.  He then looked at a chart to compare the weight to how many weeks I was, and gave me the corresponding percentile rank.  Just try to remember that the 50th percentile is perfectly average.  So the closer your LO is measuring to the 50th percentile the closer to average your LO is.  If the number is below the 50th percentile, LO is measuring a bit smaller than average, and if it's higher than the 50th, LO is measuring a big larger than average.  Does that make sense?  Also keep in mind that the average range is quite large, too, so really anything between the 20th and 80th percentile is probably fine!  Yesterday my OB told me he wouldn't be concerned unless we measured <20 or >80.  Hope that helps :)

    That helps a lot!  Thanks!
