Middle Name Suggestions to go with Rufus
We will be naming DS Rufus after DH. This is a family name and DS will be the 5th generation, so it was pretty important to DH. We agreed that I get to pick the middle name since I didn't have much of a say with the first name. Any of you ladies have any suggestions?

Can't Rufus be the middle name? I have never heard of it as a name other than for a dog. The dog of the family I nanny for is Rufus.

I would never have agreed to Rufus. Is that what your DH goes by or does he go by something different?
I agree with Meggie...with a first name like Rufus the middle name doesn't matter. Anything is better than that.
And someone suggested Oliver? Rufus Oliver? You'd be setting that kid up for beatdowns on the playground.
It's a pretty rough name...lots of people are going to dislike it. It is one of those names where if he is a super cute and funny kid it will really grow on you...but to be real...what if he isn't? With a name like that he could be the but of a lot of jokes in class.
Anyway, if you are really confident with it then I second Rufus Henry. Rufus Hudson sounds okay. Or Rufus Maxwell.
This. That is a family tradition I would be ending. There is no way in hell I would name my child Rufus. It wouldn't be so bad as a middle name but please do not torture your child with that name.

i think it's a great name, but i would suggest a more traditional MN to go with it:
rufus joseph, rufus alexander, rufus michael, rufus matthew.

I agree that it sounds good with multi-syllable, traditional names (Alexander, and Henry was a good suggestion).
I'd name my kid Rufus long before I'd name him Grayson, Brayden, or Cadyn (or whatever).
There are so many worse names than Rufus! I don't think it's as bad as everyone else is saying. You have a strong family tradition of using the name, use it. My husband has an unusual name (though gaining in popularity thanks to a celebrity naming his son that), but I wouldn't be opposed to using it if that's what he wants.
Go with Rufus! There were a lot of good mn suggestions in previous posts, so no need to rehash those - generally I'd go with something classic and not too trendy... like Rufus Alexander or Rufus William.

Or do you have a unique family name that you like that you could use for his MN? (for example... my brother's name is Captain. He's the 4th. We are also members of the Post family - as in, Post Cereal. I've always thought it would be cool to use Post as a middle name since its no longer in our last name line due to marriage.)

Henry is a great suggestion.
Actually Rufus was the 78th most popular dog name in 2008.
However, there were names MUCH higher on the list that we see around here all the time as baby names!

I agree. If my DH ever told me that I didn't get a say in what my child was going to be named then we would find himself in terrible pain.
I like Rufus. I know this puts me in the minority, but I think its nice in a quirky sort of way.
That being said, I don't think you should feel stuck naming your kid a name you don't care for, even if it is a family name. Even if it is DH's name. Even if it has been in the family for 5 generations.
Naming a kid often entails a degree of compromise, and I think that both partners should have veto power over names they really don't like. Neither partner, I think, should be able to say "It has to be _____." If you really are cool with it (and again, I actually like the name), then go for it, and ignore the naysayers. If not... don't. This unusual name will need your vote of confidence to work.
Back to your question, though. Rufus... Rufus Samuel? Rufus Jeremy? Rufus William? I think something 2-3 syllables with a classic feel will ground the name. What names do you like?
