If your babies were measuring big...

Did they induce/schedule c/s early?  I'm so curious about what they are going to decide with our baby girls.  They are both very big...one is not even on the growth chart and the other is 97th percentile.  I'm almost 33 weeks and they are both measuring about 6 lbs.  I know this could be off give or take a pound...but if your babies were big did they induce early?  I'm not sure if their size has anything to do with lung development...I don't  think it does.  Anyway....just curious!

Re: If your babies were measuring big...

  • I was induced at 37 weeks (due to Pre-E) but my twins slowed down toward the end anyways... then again that could have been bc of Pre-E... I have always read that they twins grow fast at the beginning but slow down at the end.  "Your body won't carry more than it can handle" is what my Dr said.

  • We did deliver at 35w6d in part because one of my twins was measuring very large -- he was off the growth chart (and, at 18 months, still is) and his sister had basically stopped growing and wasn't responding great during NSTs.

But, if they're both big, and it's not because of GD but is just because they're big babies, I doubt they would deliver early -- size doesn't correlate to lung maturity.

    Good luck!

  • Mine were both measuring 6+ pounds around the 36.5 week mark, and although thats not 'measuring big', my OB said she would still have kept my C/S date of 38 weeks no matter how big they got.  She said she was more concerned with them staying in, over how much they were measuring.

Anyway,I had a c/s at 37 weeks due to pre-e, and mine were 7 lbs and 5lbs 10 oz, so both were a little off on the measurements anyway.

  • I wouldn't think they would induce before you hit full-term (37w) unless something is wrong.

  • I doubt it. Mine weren't measuring quite as big as yours, but they were big and they were going to let me go to 38 weeks. If we had made it, my doctor estimated they would be well over 7 lbs. They were 36 weekers, 6 lbs 6 ounces and 6 lbs 10 ounces. One of my guys still had immature lungs and spent 12 days in the NICU.

  • I had big babies also, which then put you into another level for risk.

I will let you know that I had a friend that the pressured into 1 delivering early and having a c/s because the U/S showed the baby was well over 9 pounds.  She is a small girl - they baby was born via c/s and he was a bit under 6 pounds.  They were big time off!

I had a long detailed conversation with my peri when they informed me that the babies were showing big.

I was delivering via c/s because my one baby was breech, but I told the doctor's that I wasn't really willing to take the babies early because they were big unless he could show me that it would have a negative impact on them.

I said I was willing do whatever I needed to make sure that they stayed where they were supposed to stay and such.  Mean bed rest, hospital bed rest etc...

He agreed that we would do a watch and wait and make a decision together if it came to that.  This happened around 30/31 weeks.  At that point I was seeing the peri 1x a  week for U/S & NST and my OB  1x a week for U/S & NST.

I also pointed out the the U/S could be off a pound either way, but in my case they were dead on in the weights when the boys were born.

In the end I made it to my scheduled c/s date, which was 38 weeks exactly,

Babies were born at 6 lbs 9 oz & 7 lbs 9 oz.  I don't consider that huge - but normal.  In my mind I mean normal for singleton, my DD was 7 lb 4 oz.

Talk to your doctor, find out what his mind set is and the risks and such and let him know how or what you feel.  Like everyone else if the babies were at risk they were coming out, but I didn't want them out soley because they could be big babies and their lungs were not delveloped.

  • I think I had my final u/s around 33 weeks and both of my babies were measure just over 7 lbs...I delivered at 36 weeks, 2 days b.c of high bp and dropping platelets...otherwise they would have let me go to 38 weeks...my girls were 6.13 and 7.1 pounds at bith...good luck! I think they tend to slow down in growth toward the end...plus the u/s measurements can be off by up to a pound!
  • Between 34 and 35 weeks our girls were measuring 6 lbs and 6 lbs 7 oz.  They were born one day shy of 38 weeks (so 3 weeks later) weighing 6 lbs. 4 oz. and 6 lbs. 13 oz.  I thought they'd be bigger judging from that last growth scan!

Dr. Luke's book mentions that while singletons continue fattening up pretty rapidly in the final weeks, twins slow down earlier on.  This is one of the reasons that twins are usually delivered by 38 weeks.

    Good Luck!
