DS won't eat anything with a sauce on it. No dipping, no mixing...everything dry (a few green flakes from an herb threw him off on pasta the other day). I feel like he isn't getting that much of a variety, but there's really only so much I can do with hamburger, chicken breast/leg, chicken nuggets, deli ham & turkey, peas, carrots, rice, tator tots (refuses potatoes that aren't fried), and plain pasta and various fruits.
He won't eat cheese either...refuses sweet potatoes and squash that he used to eat as a baby, eats green beans at daycare, but refuses them at home, eats pizza with the cheese pulled off at daycare, but refuses it at home...no tomatoes ever...
Any tips? Suggestions? I can't force him to try foods or he acts like he's been contaminated with poison. At this point I'm frustrated...I haven't been eating dinner with DS because I'm not hungry and I'm just starting to even feel like eating anything in the evening b/c of my pregnancy....and DH works evenings now so he's no help...
Re: Picky toddler food...no sauces?
My DD is anti-sauce too. I just try to make sure if we have something that has a sauce on it that I give her pieces that are not as "saucey". Sometimes she will eat it..others not.
It is just a phase and it will pass. Just keep offering him different foods. If he doesn't eat them that is up to him but keep offering and don't make it a battle. If he doesn't eat it then he just doesn't. If I offer DD something that I know she has eaten without a problem before and she refuses, then I don't make anything else for her. It is eat or don't. If it is something new or something she has never taken a liking to and she refuses then I will give her something else.
I would be doing a lot of cooking in broth or juice, and trying other cooking methods. Like, if you normally bake something, try pan-frying or grilling or poaching it.
For instance, I try and go light on sauces with Joseph just because he's messy. But he doesn't like plain egg noodles. So if I'm making egg noodles, I boil them in chicken or beef broth. I simmer pork chops in apple juice. Green beans cooked in orange juice are tasty.
