Booster seat in the front seat? (Maybe judgey?)

There is a mom at my daycare with three kids. One is 2.5, one is 3 months, one is 4 (the little girl). As I was walking in, they drive up, and turns out, the little  girl drives shotgun while in one of those little shorty booster seats. Mama drives a very very nice new Nissan minivan/suv jobby thing, so it wasn't like she was in a compact  car.

I didn't really judge or anything, I was just thinking "huh, I didn't think you could do that" (as in putting a booster in the front)...since we haven't reached that situation yet.

When can kids ride shotgun? Are boosters in the front a good idea at all?

Isn't there some rule or law about a weight minimum to be in the front seat? I remember my Grandma technically not being allowed to ride in the front seat before she passed away because she was about 75 pounds. But that has to do with the airbag.

I would think the big glass window would also be a factor here with someone so small...

    I would totally judge.

Let me add to this, the girl is an itty bitty, not a "big" 4 year old by any stretch of the mind.

  • Every single car has a warning sticker under the passenger (and maybe driver seat) visor that states kids are safest in the back seat until age 12!

  • Um, I don't even like my 11 dss sitting shotgun, let alone a preschooler.  It's very dangerous because the airbag could kill them.
  • I didn't think kids could be in the front until they were like 11 or 12 years old.  Only because the force of the airbag could kill them.  You can deactivate the passenger airbag in some vehicles...maybe she did that so she could be in the front.  I personally wouldn't do that...

  • This vehicle is most likely a 2010, if not a 2009, so I assume she is able to turn off the airbag, btw.

  • That's just dumb, regardless of whether or not the airbag is turned off.

On a side note, I love your sn- one of my all time favorite movies!

  • Whether the airbag was off or not, the safest place for a young child is the backseat.

  • Not a good idea. However, the air bag should automatically turn off if the weight in the seat is less than 60 pounds.
  • I would print out the law and the height/weight limits for riding in the front and leave it on her windshield.

Very few states actually have specific laws about placing children in the back seat once they move up to a booster and beyond.

ETA: Of course by law you have to follow the vehicle manufacturer's guidelines about placement with airbags.

  • I can't get past your screen name. LMAO.

    This!

  • Kids should never ride in the front seat until at LEAST 12 (it's recommended to be later now). Of course, there are exceptions to this rule--a backseat is not available. The law depends on the state. If a child MUST ride in the front seat, it should be the oldest harnessed forward facing child, never a rear facing child and never a boostered child.
  • Oh, and a dealer would never turn an airbag off for someone, and no reputable mechanic would. That's a lawsuit waiting to happen.
  • Newer cars are automatically programmed to turn the airbag off if a light person is sitting in the seat because it is more dangerous to have it on for a child.
  • oh you guys should stfu. lol what about people with trucks without a backseat but can turn the airbag off? they are supposed to buy new cars?

  • Kids under TWELVE are not supposed to ride in the front seat! I can see making an exception for a larger 9, 10, 11 y/o, but 4?
I think it might actually be illegal to put a booster seat in the front seat.

I am generally anti-judging others' parenting decisions but when it's a clear safety issue, judge away!

But she wasn't driving a truck; she had other options than putting her tiny 4 y/o in the most dangerous place.

Well, I personally would put my kid's safety over wanting to keep driving a car that I liked.

What about people with motorcycles? Are they supposed to strap their kid on the back? <Eye roll.>

Most trucks have had that capability for a long time. Almost as long as they've had airbags. My SF has a truck that's 15 years old and he can turn the airbags off.

And frankly, this is a kind of ridiculous argument, Punk. It's like saying "What about people with motorcycles?"

In Pennsylvania, our carseat laws aren't really stringent compared to other places. For example, you can forward face coming home from the hospital if you want. There's no stipulations as to age and weight. (And people can say "you're required by law to follow the manufacturer's instructions!" until you are blue in the face. The police won't right a ticket for that because they can't carry the specs on every car seat with them. That's purely a civil suit a$$ covering measure for the company.) But even here, a booster seat is required for a kid up to 8 years old, and that booster seat cannot be in the front seat unless there is no back seat, and even then, only if any airbag can be turned off.

uh yeah, we have my 2008 with the carseats and then DH's 2000 truck with no backseat.  if push comes to shove and he absolutely had to take one of the kids somewhere, he'd turn the airbag off and put the carseat in.  hasn't happened yet, but it's a possibility.  we can't afford a new car right now.
