After reading Jody's post...Does you doctor have testing in the office?

Camden went through a similar ordeal in October as that little girl. He even had a febrile seizure (scariest thing ever). After a week of dealing with a high fever, going to the doctor and emergency 3 times each. They didn't catch his pneumonia until it had infected both lungs and he was hospitalized at Childrens (Egleston) for a couple of days. It just seems like the doctors aren't catching the fact that these babies are getting pnuemonia until it becomes severe. I like my doctor but I wish the practice had some type of in house testing or screening that they can do that could save us all the heartache (and copays). Does your doctor have some type of in house screening that they can do to test for minigitis, pneumonia, or H1N1 etc?

I'm not sure if mine does either. It would be helpful. I'd rather doctors be overly cautious then under. Doesn't screening for pneumonia involve a chest x-ray? Maybe that is why they dont do it?

Not in the office but our pedi sent us over to Piedmont for a chest x-ray the other week when Bailey had a high fever and some coughing. He wanted to make sure we knew what we were dealing with and sure enough it was early stage of pnuemonia. Also when Bailey was 6wks old, they did the nose swab for the flu/h1n1 and it was positive. That they can do in house but eveyrthing esle has to be done at the hospital.

Oh and my pedi told us that he's been seeing 3-4 cases of pnuemonia/rsv/bronchitis a week right now. He told me he would rather be over caustious then Bailey end up in the hospital. And I'm very very thankful for that.

Gavin has had 2 rounds of pneumonia this year- the first time it was diagnosed without an x-ray. The Dr just based it off of the symptoms and breath sounds. This most recent one in WI, the Dr didn't think he sounded like he had pneumonia but thankfully ordered the x-ray anyway and sure enough it was. I don't believe that our pedi has an x-ray in their office- if they do, I've never seen it. But, they have always been overly cautious with their diagnoses/treatments with Gavin because of his wheezing and for that I am very grateful. All that I have heard this year is how many LO's have gotten pneumonia. The media has made such a big deal about H1N1, but there are some other really nasty viruses out there that can be just as dangerous. I am a big believer in getting your LO to a Dr as soon as possible if they are coughing badly- you just never know. Gavin's can turn into pneumonia in a matter of hours and he may not ever make a wheezing sound! I just don't take chances with this stuff!

Kaiser has all that stuff at Gwinnett....X-ray, lab, CT, ultrasound....However, they can/will get to a point where they decide to move on from the dr office to the ER, esp at night. I have never had problems with Kaiser refusing to do tests, etc to find the source of the problems.

I really like my boys' doctor, but I remember when Ethan was around 10 months old, he was very ill, and I took him to the doctor and the doctor said that it was a viral chest cold. A couple days past and his fever shot up to 105. I went back to the doctor and he saw a different doctor because his usual one was off. This doctor was concerned and had a chest x-ray performed and it showed that he had pneumonia. Thank goodness I took him back to the doctor and I'm thankful that this doctor decided to do a chest x-ray.

Also, my doctors can check for H1N1 or the standard flu at their office. Ethan was checked a couple of months ago and the tests came back positive. As for meningitis, I believe that has to be checked in a hospital. Poor Ethan was checked for that, too, when he was 3 months old.

Ditto this. We've had pneumonia twice too. The docs caught it based on a random fever and rattling in the chest. Geneva has an albuterol inhaler for when she starts coughing. I hate the coughing. It's so scary.
