They are kind of like a netting to put in the crib. I registered for some at BRU. I am still using bumpers until he is moving and then I will take them out.
We registered for one at Buy Buy Baby. The sales lady told us they eliminate the risk of suffocating and are better for air flow. She made it sound like regular bumpers are controversial.....I am not really opininated on this topic...just relaying what she told us.
From what I hear, the primary risk is suffocation, and a less serious / less likely risk is just that airflow is reduced (so maybe baby gets less oxygen and breathes more of his own carbon dioxide).
They're controversial because it's possible for these things to happen, but occurrences are very rare... especially when baby is old enough to turn his head away from them.

It's also for better airflow through the crib, before they can move around. It's one theory on SIDS - pockets of carbon dioxide form that they rebreathe bc of lack of airflow. We never used regular bumpers.
I agree that you could just skip a bumper all together, however if you LO is anything like my daughter, she would push her pacifier out of the crib at night and get very upset. This solved that problem!

Babies r us sells them. They are a mesh fabric, so the baby can see and breathe through them. I got them with my second because he banged his head on the crib so often. But I didn't want the pillowy bumpers.

We're probably just skipping bumpers altogether.

They work pretty well.
