I was under the impression that I should wait to get a pump until I know that BFing will work for me (or after leaving the hospital). I would much rather be prepared and have it before LO comes, but thought that would be a waste if I couldn't for some reason or another BF.
So, how many of you are getting your pump prior to delivery?
Re: S/O Breast Pumps
See below. I am ordering the Laninsoh double model and thanks to baby
_bunny_hopeful I'll be getting for way less than we thought.
Good idea
We don't have rentals on breast pumps.. and everybody that BF told me how helpful it is..
So I had to take a chance and buy it... if it doesn't work I'll sell it or pass it down to someone else.
I didn't buy one last time, and I'm really glad I didn't. I ended up needed a hospital grade pump due to a previously undiagnosed condition.
You most likely won't need it until after you get home from the hospital. I would research and decide what you want to buy if you end up needing one, and then order it on-line or sending DH to Babies R Us or a local lactation center to buy it once the baby is born. There's really no difference between this and buying it and leaving it unopened in the box, except that you get to hold on to your money longer and avoid the possibility of any hassles with returns.
FYI to others, Target will take it back within their 90 day policy as long as the health seal isn't broken.
This is what I am planning on as well. Found it on clearance at Target (Lansinoh double electric for $75, instead of the normal $150). It is $65 a month to rent from the hospital and after 3 months of renting - I could have bought one at full price. Plus I wanted it at the hospital so the lactation specialist can help with the pump I will be using. If BF doesn't work out - I can hold onto it for the next LO also. Overall it made more sense for us financially to purchase instead of rent.
Actually, it isn't so silly, because I had that exact experience. It would have been a waste of money for me to have bought a pump, as even a hospital-grade pump didn't work for me, even when I did everything the LC told me to do and more. The only thing I wouldn't try was a drug that she suggested that is not approved by the FDA for lactation and is only available from overseas internet pharmacies.
