WDYT? Beverages and co-workers

Not exactly what most of you are thinking but...

My company offers complimentary beverages for our employees.  This includes coffee, creamer, sugar, tea, soda, juice and bottled water.  We order beverages every 2 weeks and keep a decent supply as we have over 100 people in this office alone.

Today, a co-worker was complaining that the Green Tea was out of stock and wondered if we could order more.  I did the beverage order last week and told him he could check another kitchen for now and we would order some more next week.  (We have 4 kitchens stocked with everything).  He then asked if we could order a few extra boxes, because he goes through 6-8 tea bags a day.  Umm, WHAT?  No wonder we are running out after 2 days!

WDYT?  I told him if he was drinking that much, he would need to buy his own and stock it at his desk.  We've already had to cut the budget around 20%.  It just seems ridiculous that an employee would think that it is okay to use 6-8 bags of tea every.single.day and have the nerve to ask us to buy more.  We already provide all the free beverages you can imagine.  We just ask that you remember that there are 100 other people here who may enjoy these as well.

Was I out of line?

1 bag of coffee produces like 30 cups of coffee.  I tea bag produces one cup of tea...

  • I don't think you were out of line. 6-8 tea basg for one person per day is a lot!  He is getting it for free, he shouldn't be so selfish..

Thankfully, we don't worry about that.  The building management takes care of it!

  • I don't think you were out of line. He's taking advantage. And like you said, one bag of coffee gets you multiple cups, one tea bag is one cup of tea. Isn't tea usually more expensive than coffee too?
  • Start sending him to zingermans every morning & make him buy ;-) J/K

Tea is more $ than coffee, and yeah he's being a turd.  Sorry.

  • Considering 6-8 tea bags cost less than 2 or 3 sodas, which is pretty common, I think he is well within his daily allotment.
  • tea cost about the same as coffee if not less, and yes I get that one BAG of coffee makes many pots, meaning many cups of coffee, but ONE BOX of tea also makes many cups of tea. I just do not think it is right to limit one employee because he drinks tea and not coffee. Do I think he should be drinking six to eight cups a day, no but I am not his wife or doctor and it is not my job to monitor him.

Before increasing the amount of tea I purchased each week I would see if there were something else I could cut back on. Maybe there is a type of tea that is not used.

  • wait - yeah can you get cheaper green tea ?

I get what you are saying.  Maybe i should have been more clear.  We offer about 12 different types of tea.  Each box comes with about 12 bags in it, and the we offer regular old Lipton which comes with 100 bags in it.  Its the specialty tea I am referring to.  He will go through a box in less than 2 days.

Its not so much that he drinks so much, its more that he was peeved that I wouldn't order more right away to accommodate his need.

  • He's being a jerk and taking advantage. He's at work, not at his mother's house.
  • If it's complimentary and you allot a specific amount per every 2 weeks, then I wouldn't order more just to keep up with his need.

It's complimentary but I think in offices that offer these type of things, it's just a courtesy.  It's not their duty to keep him fed you know?

    I agree!

  • complimentary to me means "you get what you get...and you don't throw a fit."

I mean---seriously---you are at a friends house for dinner and you want more of some appetizer that she put out...would you say "hey, where is the guacamole?  Its all gone and I want more!"  NOOOOOO!!!!!!  If you are still hungry, you find a different appetizer or deal with it with a trip to Taco Bell on your way home.....

  • Good grief.  Has he ever thought of maybe reusing a tea bag?  I think he needs to bring his own if he is using that many in a day.
  • What if you drank 8 cokes a day and was running out after a few days. Would you order more to keep up with your want, or would you wait the two weeks to get more? Put yourself in his shoes, yes its a lot but he's clearly not drinking anything else. I'm sure you have people who drink 2 or 3 cups of coffee, a few sodas, a few waters, juice, tea, or whatever else you offer.
