2nd Trimester

2nd time moms

How fast did your belly go back down? I used to have a bit of a belly and am wondering how long it will take to go back close to normal if it will at all? I'm due May 12th and am in a wedding August 21st so I am wondering whether to look into ordering a tummy tucker or something more heavy duty to hold me in. I know everyone is different but would still like to hear your belly experiences. Thanks!

Re: 2nd time moms

  • My body never went back to the way it was before. Everything was shaped differently. I had a c section so I still had a nice pouch right above the incision a year later when I get pregnant this time. I bought some spanx, had a wwedding 3 weeks after DS was born and needed something heavy duty

  • I had DD at the end of November and still wore spanx to a wedding at the end of May.

Also - even after all my pregnacy weight was gone, I still had extra "skin" on my belly.  It was never as flat as it was prior to getting pregnant the first time.

  • For me it was a good 6 months or so, but everyone is different. I was also nursing and nursing for me did NOT take the pounds off. It was after I quit nursing (after a year) that I lost the rest of my baby weight.

This time, I'm trying one of those belly band things that are suppose to help shrink the tummy flab...lol.

  • It took about 2 months or so, but never went completely down. I would get some Spanxs just so you are comfortable.

Did spanx irritate your incision at all?

  • My belly was back down by 8-9wks. However, it took several more weeks for my hips to go back to normal. So while I could get into most of my work slacks by the time I went back to work, there were several tailored skirts that I couldn't fit into for awhile after that.
  • I went back really quickly.  I was back in my regular pants in a few weeks, and with a few months had my tummy back and weighed about 10 pounds less than before I got pregnant.  Relevant information, though, I breastfed, DD had a milk allergy that prohibited me from eating dairy (no ice cream and cheese, sigh), and I started doing ab exercises my doc recommended as soon as I was cleared to.

  • I used a pad from the hospital and put the sticky side in the underwear and the other side against the incision, it gave me a cushion

  • Breastfeeding will really help your uterus shrink.  I actually felt contractions every time I nursed for the first few weeks.  By my 6 week pp visit, my uterus was back to original size.

With that being said, the flab is a totally different story.  I never got rid of it completely.  BUT I never did any type of exercising either.  I can tell you without exercising it took me about 6-8 months to feel like I "had my body back" and was fitting into my prepreg clothes.

    HTH!

This. I also had a c-section and it's like the incision acts like a shelf for flab to sit on. DD was born October 1st and we had a wedding to go to December 20th. I tried on every dress I owned, and while they fit, I felt "lumpy."

  • I am an exception to the rule. The stress of exclusively pumping really reved up my metabolism and I ended up loosing a ton of weight right away.  My belly shrank back down quickly as well.

My hips never went back in, though.

  • Ya know what they say... 9 months on. 9 months off.

I went down fairly quickly (I wore a bathing suit 5 weeks after having DS) but it was not my normal self.  Even after I went back down to the weight I was before, I looked different.  My belly was "soft."  Then again... I did have a 9.5lb baby in there.

I would say I lost all but 10lbs after 4 months.  The last 10lbs was the hardest and I lost that after about 6 months.

  • My belly was back to where it had been within 5-6 weeks.  I EBF and I think that really helped to lose the weight and get back to where I was.  Also, the demands of taking care of a newborn left me with little time to eat.  Some days I had to be reminded.

  • I was lucky. I was 10 lbs lighter 2 weeks after delivering than when I became pregnant. But my body never went back to "normal" though. Clothes fit completely different and my torso seemed to have gotten longer. My stomach is now a road map so I'll never look great in a bikini again.

But the squishyness of the belly took about 1 month to go away completely.

I did not breastfeed, so I don't think breastfeeding is the only way to quicken things.

  • With my first I gained 38 pounds total and my belly was back "down" with 3 weeks, meaning I did not look PG but I definitely was still heavier.  It took me 5 months to lose all the weight.

With my 2nd I gained 19 lbs total and my belly was back down within 5 days and I was wearing my rgular jeans in 5 days.  It was sooooooo nice after having had it take 5 months the first time.

We'll see how it goes this time aroung.

  • Everyone is different, l gained a lot of weight and I had a c-section as well and breast fed my son for six months. I slimmed down very quickly and my stomach look great. Family & friends we're shocked to see how fast I got back to my original size. Now I'm not so sure about this time around :(

  • I'd say it was 6 months before I felt like I had my flat stomach back, but I really didn't start exercising until right about that point.

I started wearing bikinis again about a month after delivery, although my belly was softer than it was pre-baby.

    Everyone's body is different though!

  • it takes 6 weeks for your uterus to return to its pre-pg size. I gained 45lbs and by 3 mos PP I was close to Pre-pg size but the tum was still a bit 'rounded' than before.
  • my body never went back to the way it was . . i had lost all the weight and then some, but the belly was there.  had to be careful on how I stood too . . i fit back into all my regular clothes approx. 6 months after the baby was born . .
  • Mine was normal after like 5/6wks? I had DD May 22 and I remember pics from the end of June where I looked pretty great for having a 1month old! Now it wasn't perfect firm belly or anything.....more like flat but wobbly.......but totally could rock a BM dress w/some Spanx w/no one being the wiser :)

  • For me, it took a while, but it did all come off.  I gained 55 lbs during pregnancy with DS.  He was born in May, and I started running again right after by 6 week check-up.  He was exclusively breastfed as well.   When I went back to work in August I had to buy new clothes because nothing fit.

I ran a half-marathon in October and was still 20 lbs over my pre-pregnancy weight.  And I trained for this race, my results were only 5 minutes off my best time ever.

I'd say by about 10 months post-partum I was back to my normal shape, and by the first birthday I was actually down about 7 pounds from that starting weight.  I did get my flat stomach back, eventually.

I'd say hope for the best, but plan to wear spanxx and a larger size dress to the wedding so you aren't disappointed in yourself if you need to.  Maybe you'll be one of the moms who is back to normal in six weeks, but maybe you won't.
