how to slow baby down from eating too fast?

my daughter is 4 weeks old and we feed her exclusivly froma bottle ( both formula and Breastmilk) but she downs the bottle so fast that she caughs and gets way too much air in, resulting in being fussy for a while after feedings.

Anyone else experience this? How did you slow your child down to get them to take the bottle slower?

  • What level nipple are you using? Can you go down a level? If you are on level 1 maybe try a preemie nipple.

  • Jaden does that when he is SUPER hungry (usually when he wakes up after sleeping at night).  The first thing I do is give him some gas drops because they NEVER work after feeding and I know he is going to down that bottle.  Then, when I'm feeding him, I make him stop so I can burp him every 2 oz.  That usually calms him down and getting those first 2 oz makes sure he is not ravenous.  I bought these NUK bottles with a medium flow nipple and realized they are WAY too fast and give him HORRIBLE gas (after a night of us both crying because his belly hurt so bad) so we switched back to playtex drop ins with a slow flow nipple.  Not sure what you're using, but that might help with the gas.  Good luck!
  • we are using the playtex drop ins with the slow flow nipple. Do they make a premie nipple for them? I am also going to look into the gas drops. Thanks!
  • Dr. Brown's bottles help decrease air in the tummy, and they make a preemie flow nipple.  Also, we saw an OT feeding specialist for DS, because he has some latching/sucking issues with BFing.  We are supplementing with EBM bottles, and he was having a hard time controlling the bottle flow.  The OT told us to feed him sidelying, and hold the bottle parallel with the floor.  It allows him to control the flow better,  because gravity is not causing the milk to run into his mouth.  Sometimes holding the bottle this way means there is a little air in the nipple, but the OT said that is no big deal -- he'll just burp it up later.  Actually, he rarely burps at all, and has not had any issues with coughing/choking while taking the bottle since we started feeding in sidelying and using the Dr. Brown's preemie nipples.

To feed sideyling, put a pillow across your lap, and lay LO on his/her side, across the front of your body -- kind of like BFing position.
