swim lesson cost

How much do you pay per class for swim lessons? I am wanting to put my son in a swim class at the Elmer School, and it works out to be about 20 bucks per class. That sounds about right to me, but I just want to check.

Also, where do you take classes? I have checked my city's aquatic center and lessons don't start until they are 3. There is a YMCA close by, but the website looks like it will be about the same as Elmer.

Thanks!

Re: swim lesson cost

  • Emler is the school we're looking at for swim lessons, also...so I'm curious to see the responses!

  • I think its more expensive if you go to a brick and mortar school, than if you if you had lessons in your backyard (or someone else's).  I have DD take lessons with three other kids in a lady's backyard and its $100 for 8 lessons.  By the end of the 4th lesson last summer, DD was jumping off the diving board without goggles or floaties.  She was 2 1/2.

I don't think $20 / lesson is high - I think Emler is a really good, reputable school with a good track record... but I do think there are cheaper alternatives.

  • I would do private lessons.  You pay more but it's worth it.  In a week my daughter was swimming across the pool on her own and diving down for rings.   I had taken her to swim lessons through our ISD and she learned nothing.   I will be taking my son (Will be 2 at the end of Feb) this spring and full expect him to be swimming on his own by the end of the week.

We have a pool so it's important that my kids are strong swimmers.

Private lessons were seriously life changing for us and swimming.

  • The city of Plano charges $31 for four 30 minute lessons (for non-Plano residents) for the 2 year old group.  This is the best deal I've heard of.

  • I've heard Emler sucks you in so you keep having to go. My kids go to Dolfin Swim School. We love it. They teach survival and swimming.
  • How much are you expecting your son to learn?  From your siggy, it looks like he's less than a year.  At that age, I just wanted DD to get comfortable in the water.  We took lessons though the city last summer. Ages 6 months to 2 years. It was 4 Saturday classes, 35 minutes each for $30 residents, $35 for non.  They've gone up a few dollars this year.  We splashed around in the water, practiced jumping in (and getting them used to going under the water), "scoops" (strokes), laying on their backs to float, sang songs and stuff like that.

A group of us are taking the classes in Feb and I'm still not expecting too much out of it but since she's a little older, she might pick up floating on her back or something this time around.

  • Kerrsgal - would you mind sharing the name and phone number of the person that provided private lessons?  If I remember right from last year, they were located on the North side of town, I'm in Keller.

     TIA!

I am not expecting much. I just want him to be comfortable in the water. We have two beach vacations planned this summer and my parents have a pool, so we are often in the water. I don't think I would need private lessons yet, since he is so young. Maybe next summer.

  • i wouldn't shell out $20 a class until i was sure my kid liked the water - i took Sydney to Mommy and Me classes at the Southlake ISD when she was 16 months old - she really enjoyed it and took to the water very well, so we went all summer - but i'd have been pissed if i'd shelled out a lot of money and she screamed the whole time - and believe me,there were a lot of kids that did - i would look for Mommy and Me classes to get him used to the water first
  • We did the mommy and me classes last year at Lifetime Fitness. The classes were great for when she was 1 but now we want something more serious so we are doing private lessons in early summer.
