Bedrest and Work...Frustrating

If I have to go on bedrest / quit working at 30-32 weeks that is when my 12 week FMLA starts.  I thought I would be put on short-term disability and then once I delivered then I would go on FMLA...but not according to my HR manager.  Being a woman and working sucks big time once you decide to have a child.

Thank God my mom will be watching the babies once I start working afterwards and I'll get to see them on my lunch hour...but still seems like we don't have enough time to bond with our children.

Thanks for letting me vent...

  • Unfortunately, FMLA runs concurrent with short-term disability in my state too.  However, you are also entitled to short-term disability after birth (6 weeks for a vaginal and 8 weeks for a c-section and more if there are complications).  So you won't have to go back right away.  Does your place of employment have any other benefits on top of short-term disability after birth, like parent/child bonding time?  That can extend the time you spend with your babies.  Also, you may be able to tag on your vacation time.

We don't.  I think I remember hearing that in Canada they get 18m.

  • In Canada we get a year at 60% pay (or something close to it) for a max of 448/week, for a pregnancy.  For multiples we get an additional 12 months, for a total of 24 months, but the 2nd year is unpaid.   Anyone can take the additional 6 months, for a total of 18 months, but those last 6 months are unpaid.  Also, these leaves can be split between partners, so if I wanted to stay home for 6 months and DH also wanted to stay home for 6 months, we would each get 60% (or something like that) for those 6 months. Plus having a baby is totally and completely free! Unless you want a fancy hospital room...
  • The exact same thing happened to me - it is very frustrating and the system totally stinks!!!!  I wanted to beat up my HR person when she told me.

But that is great that your mom will be there with the babies though and that you will get to see them at lunch.

  • I'm moving to Canada ;)

My state doesn't have short term disability unless you had a plan where you were paying for it long before you got pregnant.  However, I just learned (through a co-worker, no HR) that my work has long term disability and that pregnancy is covered under it.  I was confused because to me pregnancy is not LTD, but the insurance company is telling me that I probably qualify.

  • My co-worker works part time.  She is a huge asset to our dept as she works mostly weekends.  This past year when she went to HR to talk about her upcoming maternity leave, she was told she did not qualify for FMLA since she was part time and per my companies policy she only qualified for FOUR WEEKS maternity leave after her C-section. The HR person kind of smirked when she told her that.   And I work at a hospital. Nice, huh?

  • I feel all of your pain and frustration.  I work for a large insurance company but all of their agents function as their own small business, so I actually work for an employer who has 3 employees.  Because of this I do not qualify for FMLA, only Short Term Disability with the state I live in.  The state has not updated their payout amount since 1989 and the max is $170 a week.  I have been on bed rest since 23w1d and was told at 25w3d I would not be able to return until after the babies were born.  When I went to pick up my sicktime pay out and get the STD paperwork, my desk had been packed up and I had been replaced.  I have no claim on my job since the office is so small, all the employer has to do is treat everyone the same.  The worst part is she never told me, so I was quite shocked to say the least, so after the STD runs out I am the lucky one who gets to file for unemployment.  It is quite frustrating and just mean.  Haha.

I would love to see the rules change, but who knows when that will happen.

  • That's what i fear is being put on bed rest and being out of work for much longer than i had hoped.  My company doesn't offer anything for maternity leave except FMLA.  You can use your vacation but that only covers a short time off and the rest is with out pay.  That's the biggest thing that has me worried is not having that extra paycheck.  My company doesn't offer STD either so yeah it really sucks.
