Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Dressing a baby question..

Hi new moms -

I'm trying to figure out what I'm missing in terms of clothing before the baby shows up. I feel like I have a sh*t-ton of 'onesies' with cut designs on them, the ones people give as gifts. But I only have like 3 plain white ones of each size (NB/0-3/3-6). NB ones are long-sleeved with mitten cuffs. 0-3 are short sleeved.

From what other people have said, the baby spends a lot of time in gowns, sleeper sacks, one piece pantsuits, swaddling blankets at first. My question is - do you need plain white onesies to put underneath all those items? or plain white t-shirts? Or just put them in the gown or sleeper sack?

Thanks!

Re: Dressing a baby question..

  • It really just depends on your baby and how his/her temps regulate.  We put DS in long sleeved onsies with pants or footed sleepers and then used blankets as needed.  The only time that I use the plain white onsies as undershirts are when he is wearing a T shirt instead of a onsie as his outfit.  I just don't like his skin being exposed if his shirt rides up.

  • Get more NB sized onsies! I had 5 and she spit up on every single one, and we go through 2 a day sometimes (spit up, poop or pee). My mom went out and bought me like 4 more packs and now I feel like I have enough.

I put short sleeved on her, and then a shirt over it. but its warm in our house so sometimes the short sleeved are enough.

NB sized carters seems to fit her the best. they make cute ones with designs, long sleeved, that have matching pants, that fit well at this stage too.

0 - 3 are way too big on her. and we have like 6 Gap long sleeved ones in their smallest size that are a little too long and the sleeves are long too.

We put her in a short sleeved onsie and fleece NB jammies... or just regular cotton ones. this is how she spends most of her time, but i venture out with shirts and pants when i feel like dressing her up a bit haha i can't help it!

and we never used a sleep sack. i'm sure many many many parents do. she seems fine in regular sleepers.?

  • I use a onesie under everything, but I don't just use plain.  I use plain or ones with pictures on them.
  • I was determined to have enough onesies and we've only used them once or twice.  We live in a cold area so for us he has been mostly in the footed sleepers.  They are warm and not too much of a pain when it's time for a diaper change.

The first two weeks we did have him in the sleeper sacks quite a bit because they were easy to access the diaper.

We don't put the onesies underneath.  They didn't in the hospital and  he did just fine.  If you can get receiving blankets from the hospital, those are great because they swaddle MUCH better than the ones you buy in the stores.

We're also fond of the Swaddle Me, makes it easy to swaddle him, especially if he's fussy and the fleece/velour ones are warm.

  • I have a question too!

What about for the first week home from the hospital before the cord falls off?  What do you dress them in?  I'd think the onesies would irritate the area and was thinking of doing jusst the side snap undershirts and sleepsacks or sleepers?

I thought we'd use tons of onesies but we rarely put them on LO. DH hates them and is afraid to put them on or take them off so he complains whenever I put them on DS. For us, it's a waste to have so many and we stick to one piece outfits mostly.

We used the Halo Sleep Sack a lot in the beginning but not so much now. I put a long sleeve shirt on him befoe putting him in the sleep sack because he always wanted his arms free.

  • I only used onsies on LO as a newborn when we were leaving the house and I wanted her to have an extra layer in the cold. When we were home I made the sure the house was warm enough and kept her in fleese sleepers. She slept in a swaddle sack. Honestly when she was teeny tiny I just didn't want to deal with cramming a onsie over her head when  I didn't have to. I was a nervous Mommy.

  • It depends on your LO.  I bought so many long sleeved onesies and footy sleepers and he can't wear them.  He is hot all the time!  Around the house he wears his diaper and a snap shirt... even a short sleeved onesie makes him sweat.  These are wonderful and easy to get in and out of...

He will sleep in the tee shirt and a cotton swaddle.

  • I put these (or something similar.. I got 6 pink ones for free when I had her, and I hate pink, so they go under stuff all the time) under any two piece outfits I put DD in, as I don't want her to get cold when we go out. Otherwise, she just wears a onesie and pants (either footy pants or pants and socks), or sleepers, or one piece outfits with socks. If I can't find a diaper shirt to put under her outfits, then any onesie I can get my hands on will work (I don't care if there's pictures on it, it will get spit up on anyway, so why worry?).

We just put DD in loose sleepers, it didn't seem to irritate the stump. Mind you, it also fell off in 4 days, so we didn't have to worry about it too long. I did actually buy a side-snap undershirt in the one month size from Sears... and then I forgot about it until she was about 2 months old! (surprisingly, it still fit.. sort of. Was a tad snug, but overall wasn't too bad.. she's a small-ish baby)

  • During the day he is usually in a patterned onesie and pants and socks. The only time use plain onesies is if he's in a regular shirt and pants so he's covered when the shirt rides up. A night he wears footed sleepers. He refuses to be swaddled.

  • DD is in footed sleepers ALL the time.  It's cold here and pants rub her umbilical cord.  We've only used 2 of the 15 onsies we got.  And most she'll never wear, because at 3 weeks old she was wearing 3-6 month clothes.  Don't go crazy buying anything until you know how big LO is.

  • Dont forget TIGHTS--They work great when you dont want to deal w/socks falling off--and babies look so cute in them--most stores carry them Children's place and gap hold up well

  • It really depends. My IL are horrified that we don't put a onesie under DD's footed sleepers ("she's going to freeze to death!"), but when we do, she sweats like crazy. She's just a warm baby, like her dad. He wears sandals and shorts almost all winter LOL. We only have one sleeper gown; I usually put a onesie and socks on with that, since the bottom is open. She seems comfortable in that.
