Babies: 3 - 6 Months

I am retarding the introduction of solids to DS.

Does that work?  Or still bad?

  • Eh, saying it intentionally to try to "fix" a problem doesn't really help.
  • Are you trying to be funny?? Indifferent

    It's not working...

    Wondering the same thing...Confused

  • I guess TECHNICALLY is makes sense if you are looking at the definition of the word (though if you mean til 6 months that isn't even really delaying, that's just not starting early, but that's another pet peeve of mine!) but it still doesn't sound right b/c I doubt someone your age would ever say that unless you were just trying to be ridiculous and try to use the word.
  • This is completely unnecessary.  Check you life out.

  • If you were trying to be funny that was a huge FAIL.

I welcome you to come to my house and use the word retarded in any sense....I can promise you, you will have every member of my family jumping down your throat. If you had a LO or any family member with a mental disability you would not be using the word. Even my younger brother who has down syndrome knows better and corrects people when they use that word.

  • Jeesh, y'all!  We're all friends here.  Can't we have a healthy debate?  I was just checking boundaries on usage of the word.  I didn't know if y'all REALLY thought it should be erased from the English language entirely.  So calling someone with a mental disability "mentally retarded" is offensive?  Even if it's true?

BTW, my husband suffered a TBI when he was 16 and is technically "retarded" in the mental sense.  He had to re-learn how to eat, walk, talk, etc.  We don't get bent out of shape about the word though.

And no.  I was not trying to be funny.  This is but a friendly debate.

And yes.  I agree that I'm not technically delaying solids but I needed an example.

  • If you're being serious, then using the term in that manner is acceptable.

If you're trying to be funny or mock then that's not even remotely funny

  • The problem is when you use the word "retarded" as an insult.  Even in the case of "I'm retarded."  If you meant, "I'm stupid," then say that.  It's less offensive.  And just because your DH had a TBI doesn't necessarily mean he's mentally retarded.  Mental retardation is defined as an IQ of less than 70-75 (depending on your state).

Due to the controversy of using this word as an insult, most educated people refrain from using it at all.  Especially since the word "delay" is much more appropriate in most cases (like your example).

My mother has been a special education teacher my entire life, and I have my degree in special education.  Maybe your husband really does have MR, but if he does, he is one of the few people with it who do not take offense to the use of the word "retarded" as an insult.

This doesn't really seem like the topic for a friendly debate, especially after you saw how offended some people were, myself included.

Here's the technical definition of the word moron

Moron is a controversial term once used in psychology to denote a category of mental retardation.[1] The term was closely tied with the American eugenics movement.[2] Once the term became popularized, it fell out of use by the psychological community.

This game you're playing could go on forever. She shouldn't have called her a name of the use of moron is not as socially offensive to the majority as is "retard" and you know it.

Honest to goodness guys, can we just stop trying to take away from the original point, which was that it's not acceptable to use the word retarded in a derogatory manner.

All of this "cleverness" in trying to one up each other is disgusting.

  • Thank you, Kelsie, for the point about the term "moron." What is with the judgmental attitudes if you are, in turn, going to insult someone right back, knowing full well, presumably, that virtually every insulting name has origins in negativity, whether related to mental retardation or a number of other societal issues? Manage a way to point out someone's offense without losing your own dignity.
