Confession: I don't understand DHs who don't deal with poop. (that's right, a POOP post.)

Is it just the first time dads that don't yet have a kid that say "I'm not changing a poop diaper" or that don't do the CD laundry? Or just certain guys?

My DH doesn't really care at all. He changes poop diapers, does the laundry, etc. I don't get why any DH wouldn't do those things? There's nothing special about mamas that make them capable of dealing with poop and not dads! And if the alternative is sposies, well then their DHs might as well get used to poop all over them with all those blowouts!

Maybe I'm missing something, but everytime someone posts that their DH doesn't deal with poop, I mentally give them a Huh?...

(6 times. I said poop 6 times in this post.)

  • Ah... poop.

My DH refuses to deal with cleaning the poop off the diaper.  I've just dealt.  He DOES have a depressingly easy gag reflex - and smells in the past have set it off.  He does change DS, which he was worried about, but I told him he'd be fine.  It hasn't really bugged me until fairly recently.  I admit - I'm getting tired of coming home to a pile o' poop that I need to take care of.  I, myself, have given DH the side eye because of it, but it was an agreement we reached before agreeing to CD, so I'm stuck.

Poop count: 4, if you count the 'count'.

  • I love the poop count.

I agree.  I feel the same way about DH's that just don't change diapers.  I remember someone once posting that their DH had changed 2 diapers and I looked at the ticker and their little one was 6 months old.  Confused  I get that if you're a SAHM you change your LO the most, but if DH is home in the evenings / on weekend why can't he help out?  My DH has no problem with any of it - we chose to have a child together, of course he's going to help out!

  • I dunno.  I don't expect mine to deal with it because he didn't get a vote on whether or not we used cloth diapers.  I made the decision without his input, however, I do expect him to change a poopy diaper.  I just don't expect him to scrape it.  Also, I don't even want him washing my clothes so I certainly don't want him washing diapers either!

But I agree with you that I don't understand ones that say they absolutely will not deal with poop at all.

Edit:  I should add that I have never had to even ask DH to change a poopy diaper or have had an argument over it at all.  He is more than willing and he does scrape the diapers even though I tell him that I will do it.  He doesn't complain even without having a vote!

I only got in poop 3 times.....I need to work on that.

My DH is the same way and I feel the same way.  I really think at least part of it is laziness on my DH's part which unfortunately is not out of character.

That's what I figured with most of these anti-daddy-poop situations.

MY DH has a really bad gag reflex too- he can't clean up our dog's poop without tossing his cookies, but for some reason Noah's diapers don't bother him. Maybe it's because it's his own child, maybe (probably!) it's because Noah is EBF. However, when we do go to solids, at least DH is already in the habit of changing them so he can't back out now! haha

  • it took a while before DH was comfortable dealing with poop, but he's great about it now. If we are both home and DS poops, we tag-team change him. I start while DH entertains, I do the first wipe and then take the diaper in to be scraped. He finishes up and puts the fresh diaper on. If I'm not here, he does just grand on his own. He will do laundry too.

That totally makes sense.  And it's even cooler that he's willing to do it anyway.

Well, add in that he only changed about 10 diapers during DS' first year though.....not by his choice though.  He jumped right in when he got home and never once complained.  He's a keeper :)
  • My husband doesn't LIKE changing poop diapers (poop poop poop poop) but he does it--granted he does it a lot less often than I do, since I'm usually in charge of da baybeh, but usually at some point during the weekend I ask him to do it, and he does. I mean, I don't LIKE changing the poop diapers either, but that's the way it works with babies.

Now, my dad wouldn't change poop diapers, and with good reason--he has the weakest stomach known to man. I have to warn him if I'm going to change a poop diaper in his vicinity so he can run away. He did TRY once, but ended up throwing up. So my mom got to clean TWO messes. But at least he tried. :(

My FIL has never changed Noah's diaper. Ever. And they keep him on Mondays for cryin' out loud! He said he'll change them when he's older. Little does he know that they're NASTIER then!

  • I was afraid this would prevent my DH from being 100% on the CD bandwagon... when I mentioned it to him the other night, he said "Give me some rubber gloves and I'll do whatever it takes."

Ah, such a romantic, my DH!!

  • DH changes them without batting an eye.  What is alarming is when MY parents visit and I ask DH to change one of the kids especially if there is poop (I call poop diapers "special daddy diapers"), my mom chimes in, "Julygal! He's been working all week."  She worked full-time and my dad worked full-time, so I don't know who changed our diapers growing up with that logic.

  • My DH doesn't refuse to do it. He doesn't spray the diapers b/c he's not very good at it and sprays water/poop everywhere. I've just had more practice with the sprayer since I change the majority of diapers. He also doesn't do the diaper laundry b/c the routine is complicated and ever changing with our stupid FL'er . . . so on the occasions where I might need him to step in and help, it would take longer for me to explain what to do than for him to do it.

  • DH is a SAHD, so he doesn't have a choice but to change poop diapers. That said, he was on board with cloth from the very beginning and was totally willing to do anything with poop diapers that needed to be done.
  • DH has no issues with doing diaper laundry (that's generally his job, actually) and changes dirty diapers, but he does make sure everyone knows exactly how bad it rates on the disgusting scale.  He really didn't find it gross until DD was totally on solids.

Now I'll come home after they've been alone for a while and he'll be like, "Dude.  She pooped TWICE.  She was saving it up for me, I know it.  And you have NO idea how stinky it was.  Like, I could smell it for a good fifteen minutes after we flushed.  I swear.  Even she said it was gross."

But, perhaps, he's just a boy who likes to talk about poops and farts. *shrugs*

  • I don't get it either.  MH handles poop fairly well.  He didn't care for the giant blowouts our son would have back when he only pooped once a week.  I can't blame him for that though!  He's never done CD laundry but not b/c he won't.  I do all the laundry b/c I'm very particular about laundry.  It's just my thing!  I'd prefer to do it all.  He helps me stuff the diapers and fold everything so it evens out.

  • DH said that before DD was born, but now he's fine with it.  He even scrapes the poo CDs.

However, he's not allowed to wash the CDs because he has before and used the wrong detergent.

  • We've been having this discussion recently in my home b/c I am insisting we use CDs for our LO.  DH wants to use disposibles.  He said if we use CDs he will change them, but not wash them b/c he would not use them at all if given the choice.  I said I'll take it.  As long as he is on board with using them I'll pick up the rest of the slack.

  • My DH never made a big deal out of poopy diapers.  In fact, reading this I feel bad for how cranky I was to DH before we left for work this morning.  Sad  Because of his efforts I almost never handle the poopy diapers.

I mean...we do an equal amount of diaper changes.  But if I'm changing DD, DH will pop his head into her room & ask if its a poopy one.  If it is he takes it to the bathroom right away while I finish up with her.  And at night when we get home from work, he handles her daily wet bag of diapers from daycare while I'm feeding her dinner.

Laundry is his chore (I hate it and he'd rather do that than dusting or cooking), so he's responsible for all the cloth diaper laundry too.
