It's okay. Some parts of it are really good, some parts I don't like.
But I must admit...breastfeeding to four years old is way past my comfort level . Can you imagine being 18 and being able to REMEMBER being breastfed? I think that would be traumatizing, lol.
But, to each their own.

My son is 21 months old and I'm following baby led weaning, which means I'm now into toddler led weaning. I never imagined I'd be where I am today, but I am. I hope that he is weaned before age 4, but ???. My friend nursed until she was 5, doesn't feel weird about it, and doesn't know how long she'll nurse her baby for.
It's just so interesting that other cultures norm is so different and what we struggle with is not even on the radar in other countries.
I don't know what is right, but I know that weaning at 1 year wasn't for us.
At what point would you stop (in theory, it's unlikely) if your child DIDN'T self wean?
I've seen eight year olds breastfeeding. At what point do you say enough is enough?
I don't have the answer. I just think people shouldn't be old enough to remember it later, lol.
And yes, it's definitely interesting to see how different breastfeeding is viewed in other cultures. I'm okay living in my culture, though, where formula is available to help those of us with milk supply issues!

BTW, the reason I am not 100% liking the article is that I feel she is being really negative about certain things in our culture that don't warrant being negative about.
Did you take it that way? Or am I reading into emotion that isn't there?

I don't think that there is anything wrong with breastfeeding at age 2.
But at some point, I do believe it becomes odd to have what is typically a private body part exposed to an older child. No matter how natural it is. I'm just not sure what age that is (in my own mind).

And I'm articulating myself horribly.
So let me just say that just because something is beyond my comfort level doesn't mean I think it's wrong.
Unless your child is 16. Then I think breastfeeding is wrong :P

(I meant that if you were still trying to breastfeed someone who is CURRENTLY a teenager, it would be wrong)
You are absolutely right that there are problems with our culture's attitude towards breastfeeding . Absolutely.
I don't think that means that every other culture's attitude is perfect, but ours sucks. I mean VERY FEW people understood why I was upset that I couldn't EBF. Very few people understand why my sister bothered battling latching issues and having to give up dairy. Or why my best friend would give up her "freedom" to EBF past six months.

I didn't read the whole article. I only skimmed it.
But I don't think it would be traumatizing to be able to remember nursing. I guess I don't see how it's any worse than knowing that my mom nursed me.
I hope to wean by 4, but I would think/hope he wouldn't be traumatized if I did.

Ditto. But I'd love to explore this idea that remembering BFing can be traumatizing, as brought up by pps. Why would that be? DH remembers BFing (he was weaned around 3 or 4) and isn't traumatized. Is it the exposure or the act itself? I took showers with my mother until I was maybe 7 or 8 and seeing her completely naked was normal, not traumatic. I am tempted to start another thread...
