Preemies

age adjusting

I had my baby at 36 weeks and this is my first. No one has told me about adjusting her age and when I read posts on here about babies and what they're doing it concerns me because my baby doesn't do those things.

She doesn't coo, she doesn't smile at me. Is this because technically she's only 10 days old and is behind in developing? Should I expect her to catch up slowly??

Re: age adjusting

  • Try not to get caught up in the whole actual vs. adjusted age thing.  It is true that for preemie milestones/development, you can take into consideration their adjusted age.  But even then, there is a huge range when they reach those milestones.  DS is 13m actual and 11 adjusted and still doesn't crawl/walk.  We will begin physical therapy to help him gain better muscle tone, but we know that with or without PT, he would eventually walk.

  • Hey Larlo!?

Your DD is a late term preemie. You could very well keep her adjusted age into consideration when seeing what she does developmentally. She had NICU time, she was early, she'll have some struggles. Feel free to post here with us!?

  • I just feel that compared to some babies here on the bump that are around her age are doing things that she is not. she doesn't coo and she doesn't smile at me. She does smile while she is asleep and dreaming, though. does that count? lol.

I know that all babies are different and don't do the same things at the same time, and this being my first baby I was curious.
