Need help...

What were the absolute must you needed when LO came home, besides the obvious crib, diapers, wipes?

  • Moby wrap!!  Makes getting things done actually possible!

I highly recommend either an angelcare monitor (for the crib) or utilizing an arm's reach co-sleeper.  We did both and I am forever grateful we did.

Lily didn't care for a swing, bouncer, bumbo, or many of the other "mainstream" things.  We used blankets as burpcloths because she had such bad reflux so you can never have enough of those!

Other than that, I really can't think of much.  Do you have a discharge date yet??????????????????????????????  I am so excited for you!!!

  • bibs (the terrycloth ones worked best), burp cloths (we used cloth diapers). and bibs. and burp cloths. and bibs, and burp cloths.

and a swaddleme sleepsack, which DS used while he was in the NICU as well. i think that's why he slept so well!

and then some more bibs and burp cloths. seriously, we had over 50 bibs and 75 burp cloths and still did laundry every 3 days or so.

We haven't gotten a date yet but I expect her to come home within the next 3-4 weeks!!!

  • I totally agree. I made my own moby wrap and it was very helpful! Also it's crazy how fast they go through bibs and burp cloths. We used quite a few blankets to swaddle him. We also used a lot of dreft laundry detergent and distilled water for the microwave sterlizer. Find out from the NICU if you ll need any milk fortifiers- if you are breastfeeding. Kevin needed iron and some formula added for extra calories. Hope she's home soon.
  • Ditto the moby! Also- food for yourself that is easy to pop in the microwave. We swaddle with recieving blankets- I have about 15 of the hospital ones, they work best for us. Also hospital pacis- since thats what Cooper was used to.

We brought a music box into the hospital, and had the nurses use it alot, when Cooper came home, I think the familiarity helped.

Good luck and hang in there-the last few weeks were the hardest for me, but she will be home before you know it!

  • Simon loved being carried in the Moby Wrap and he also loved his bouncy seat.

If your LO comes home on bottle feedings, I recommend getting the Medela BM storage containers https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2815289.  You can put a bottle nipple on the top and use them as the bottles.  They are a graduated cylinder so you know exactly how many cc's your LO is eating.  Regular bottles just have oz., usually in increments of 2oz.

  • A few different types of bottles (if you are bottle feeding).  Noah hated the bottles I had and DH had to go out that night and get different kinds until we found some (Dr. Brown's) that he would take.

A white noise machine, or some type of soothing music CD.  Going from a loud environment to a quiet one is sometimes a hard transition.

Sleep!!!!  Get plenty of that before hand!

  • We actually forgot to get bottles. I can remember looking at DH and laughing because DS was eating so little and we had all the little bottles with the nipples that just attach that we actually forgot to get bottles.

We like the playtex drop ins. To us they are wonderful and DS loves them.

Butt Paste was also something that we picked up later but I wish we had gotten right away cause the cream they gave us in the NICU was like clown makeup and I think cause more irritation trying to clean it off then it actually helped.

Our bouncy seat and boppy are also great saviors.
