1st Trimester

2-Door Cars and Car Seats

Okay, this questions is especially for those moms that have done this before. I've got lots of time to decide this, but I'm already thinking about what to do about using a car seat in my 2-door Alero.

DH and I would love to not have to buy a new vehicle right now, especially since both of our cars are paid for... I've heard I should measure the space I have and get a car seat first, to practice and see if it'll fit. But realistically, is it a total nightmare?

Re: 2-Door Cars and Car Seats

  • DH has a Hyundai Tiburon and we have no problem getting him in and out. Granted, we usually take my 4 door car if we have DS, but DH's is fine too. I am a little concerned about getting the infant seat in the car. We may practice ahead of time to see if it is an option.

  • I can't say from experience but I heard that the stationary seats are not too bad in a 2 door because you just have to put the baby in and out and the seats slide pretty well to get the baby in and out. But the baby seats that have to be taken in and out can be sort of tedious trying to get them in there and back out again. My friend told me that, but like I said I am not speaking from experience...haha!

  • I reluctantly traded in my VW New Beetle in my second trimester for a four door Nissan.

Now I wish I had purchased an even bigger car.

  • DH has a ford mustang and we will be trading that car in ASAP! When it's just him and DD in the car, it's fine, but when we all try to get in, it's a nightmare. The passenger seat has to be all the forward to fit the infant seat, so there really is no room for a passenger unless they're very short. I can't imagine having to fit two car seats in that car!
  • Here I am speaking from my experience. I have 2 door car and we put DS car seat right in the middle and while taking him out or putting him in we move one of the front car seats. He is 2.5 yrs now and although we have bought another car now as we are having another baby but we still use 2 door car with no issues. Its not the best option around but within days you will get used to it. When I was pregnant with DS we were really concerned about this and then at that time we were not sure about how much insurance will cover the pregnancy cost and all sorta stuff so kinda delayed the car purchase. Although after that it took us 2 years to buy minivan. More than money we just got the adjusted with our car. If you are still confused, you can always go to nearby dealers and see how much will it cost to trade in? May be that will help you in making a decision. Also, I am in favor of putting car seat in the middle of back seat so that way I always thought 2 or 4 doors will not make much difference :p.
  • DH drives a 2-door Cavalier coupe and we have a car seat in the back. I actually like it more than I thought I would, b/c if the passenger seat is pushed all the way up, I can literally stand in the car and get DS settled, whereas with my car (4-door Cutlass) I have to be outside. Sometimes in MI weather that's crappy :)

  • Thanks for all the advice and stories girls!!

  • I know that I have found a website before that rates how well different carseats work with different cars.  You might want to try and google carseat reviews and see if you can find anything.
